Teacher who won Nobel prize after his Students - Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar , the well-known scientist in Astro-physics, was born on October 10, 1910 in Lahore. The book “Chandrasekhar’s Limit” earned him a great fame.
Since his parents came to Chennai, when he was young, he did his schooling in Chennai itself. After his school hours, he went straight to the library. At the library, instead of reading the fiction books, he read books pertaining to Chemistry. He read all the research essays published in the weekly and monthly magazines.
The books on science, written by Arnold Somerfield and Arthur Compton were the ones that instilled in him keen interest in the field of Chemistry and fed his hunger for knowledge. Consequently, he wrote scientific essays in magazines even when he was very young.
His essays were published in the “Indian Journal of Physics”. Before he could complete his B.A.Hons. degree at the Presidency College in Chennai, he had achieved a great fame through his scientific essays.
It is a matter of significance that essays get published in the “Presidis” magazine of the Royal Society. Subrahmanyan’s essays got published in that also.
He was hailed as the greatest Astrophysicist when he was just 27 years old. Then he went to America. There, the famous astronomer and the director of Erks Observatory, Auto Stoov, identifying Chandrasekhar’s skill got him employment in Chicago University.
He taught two students amidst his busy schedule. Both of them received Nobel Prize in the field of Chemistry in 1957. Only after that, later in 1983, Chandrasekhar was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
He died in the year 1995 at Chicago, USA.

வானியற்பியல் துறையில் நன்கு அறியப்பட்ட சுப்பிரமணியன் சந்திரசேகர், லாகூரில், 1910-ஆம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 10 அன்று பிறந்தார். அவர் எழுதிய ’சந்திரசேகர்'ஸ் லிமிட்’ புத்தகம், அவருக்குப் பெரும் புகழை ஈட்டியது.
அவர் சிறுவனாக இருந்தபோது அவரது பெற்றோர் சென்னைக்கு குடிபெயர்ந்ததால், சென்னையிலேயே தனது பள்ளிப் படிப்பை முடித்தார். பள்ளி நாட்களில், வகுப்புகள் முடிந்ததும் நேராக நூலகத்துக்குச் செல்லும் பழக்கம் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
நூலகத்தில் புனைவு நூல்களை படிக்காமல், வேதியியல் சார்ந்த புத்தகங்களை மட்டுமே படித்தார். வார மற்றும் மாத இதழ்களில் வெளியாகும் அனைத்துக் கட்டுரைகளையும் படித்தார். அர்னால்டு சோமர்பீல்டு மற்றும் ஆர்தர் காம்ப்டன் எழுதிய அறிவியல் புத்தகங்களைப் படித்ததால், அறிவியல் மேல் அதீத ஆர்வம் கொண்டார்.
அதன் மூலம் தமது அறிவுப்பசியை ஆற்றிக் கொண்டார். அதே சமயம், அவரது சிறு வயதிலேயே அறிவியல் கட்டுரைகள் எழுதி, இதழ்களில் வெளியிட்டார்.

அவர்தன் 27வது வயதிலேயே, தலைசிறந்த வானியற்பியலாளராகத் திகழ்ந்தார். இதன்பின் அமெரிக்கா சென்றார். அங்கு, பிரபல வானியலாளரும், எர்க்ஸ் அப்சர்வேட்டரியின் இயக்குனருமான ஆட்டோ ஸ்டூவ், இவரது திறமைகளைப் பார்த்து, சிகாகோ பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் வேலை வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தார்.
பரபரப்பான வாழ்க்கைச் சூழலிலும் இரண்டு மாணவர்களுக்கு வழிகாட்டினார். அவர்கள் இருவரும் 1957-இல், வேதியியலுக்கான நோபல் பரிசு பெற்றனர். அதன் பிறகு 1983-இல் தான் சந்திரசேகருக்கு வேதியியலுக்கான நோபல் பரிசு கிடைத்தது.
1995-ஆம் ஆண்டு அமெரிக்கா சிகாகோ நகரில் சந்திரசேகர் காலமானார்.
