Once King Krishnadeva Raya ordered his Home Minister to build several wells in the state. As summer was approaching, the king wanted the wells to be ready soon so that people could get some relief in the summer. The Home Minister took a lot of money from the royal treasury for this work. Soon many wells were prepared in the city as per the orders of the king. After this one day the king visited the city and inspected some wells himself. He was satisfied to see his order being fulfilled.
One day in summer, some villagers from outside the city approached Tenali Raman, all of them with complaints against the Home Minister. Tenaliram met the king the next day and said, 'Maharaj! I have received information about the presence of some thieves in Vijayanagara. They are stealing our wells.'
On this the king said, “What are you talking about, Tenali Raman How can a thief steal a well?”
“King! I knew that you would not believe me, so I have brought some villagers along. They are all standing outside. If you don't believe me, you can call them in the court and ask. They will tell you everything in detail.” The king called in the villagers inside the courtroom.
A villager said, “Maharaj! All the wells made by the Home Minister have disappeared, you can see for yourself.” The king agreed and the Home Minister, Tenali Raman, along with some courtiers and villagers went to inspect the wells. After inspecting the whole city, he found that there were no wells in other places and villages around the capital.
Seeing that the king had come to know about this, the Home Minister was terrified. In fact he had ordered only a few wells to be built. He spent the remaining money on his comforts.
By now even the king had understood the meaning of Tenali Raman's words. The king scolded the home minister severely and ordered him to build a hundred more wells from his own wealth. All the responsibility of this work was entrusted to Tenali Raman.
மந்திரக் கிணறுகள்
அரசர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் தனது உள்துறை அமைச்சருக்கு மாநிலத்தில் பல கிணறுகளை அமைக்கும்படி ஒருமுறை உத்தரவிட்டார். கோடைக்காலம் நெருங்கியதால், மக்களுக்கு ஓரளவு நிவாரணம் கிடைக்கும் வகையில் கிணறுகள் விரைவில் அமைக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்று மன்னர் விரும்பினார். இந்த வேலைக்காக உள்துறை அமைச்சர் அரச கருவூலத்தில் இருந்து நிறைய பணம் எடுத்தார். அரசரின் கட்டளைப்படி நகரத்தில் விரைவில் பல கிணறுகள் வெட்டப்பட்டன. அதன் பிறகு ஒரு நாள் மன்னர் நகரத்திற்குச் சென்று சில கிணறுகளை தானே ஆய்வு செய்தார். தன் உத்தரவு நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டதைக் கண்டு திருப்தி அடைந்தார்.
கோடையில் ஒரு நாள், நகருக்கு வெளியே இருந்து சில கிராமவாசிகள் உள்துறை அமைச்சருக்கு எதிரான புகார்களுடன் தெனாலி ராமனை அணுகினர். தெனாலி ராமன் மறுநாள் அரசரைச் சந்தித்து, மகாராஜா! விஜயநகரத்தில் திருடர்கள் சிலரின் நடமாட்டம் இருப்பதாக எனக்கு தகவல் கிடைத்துள்ளது. அவர்கள் நம் கிணறுகளைத் திருடுகிறார்கள் என்றார். அதற்கு அரசன், என்ன பேசுகிறீர் தெனாலி! ஒரு திருடன் எப்படி கிணற்றைத் திருட முடியும் எனக் கேட்டார்.
ராஜா! நீங்கள் என்னை நம்ப மாட்டீர்கள் என்று எனக்குத் தெரியும், அதனால் நான் சில கிராம மக்களை அழைத்து வந்தேன். அவர்கள் அனைவரும் வெளியில் நிற்கிறார்கள். நம்பவில்லை என்றால் அரசவையில் அவர்களை அழைத்துக் கேட்கலாம். எல்லாவற்றையும் விரிவாகச் சொல்வார்கள் என்றார் தெனாலி ராமன். அரசர் வெளியே நின்று கொண்டிருந்த கிராம மக்களை அரசவைக்குள் அழைத்தார். மகாராஜா! உள்துறை அமைச்சர் அமைத்த கிணறுகள் அனைத்தும் மறைந்து விட்டன, நீங்களே பார்க்கலாம் என்றார் ஒரு கிராமவாசி.
கிராமவாசியின் கோரிக்கைக்கு சம்மதம் தெரிவித்தார் மன்னர். அடுத்து உள்துறை அமைச்சர், தெனாலி ராமன், சில அரசவையினர் மற்றும் கிராம மக்களுடன் கிணறுகளை ஆய்வு செய்ய மன்னர் புறப்பட்டார். நகரத்தை முழுவதுமாக ஆய்வு செய்த பிறகு, தலைநகரைச் சுற்றியுள்ள பிற இடங்களிலும் கிராமங்களிலும் கிணறு இல்லை என்பதைக் கண்டறிந்தார்.
இதையறிந்த அரசரைக் கண்டு உள்துறை அமைச்சர் திகிலடைந்தார். உண்மையில் உள்துறை அமைச்சர் ஒரு சில கிணறுகளை மட்டுமே கட்ட உத்தரவிட்டிருந்தார். மீதிப் பணத்தைத் தன் சுகபோகங்களுக்காகச் செலவழித்துவிட்டார். அதற்குள் தெனாலி ராமனின் வார்த்தைகளுக்கான அர்த்தம் அரசருக்கும் புரிந்துவிட்டது. உள்துறை அமைச்சரை கடுமையாக கண்டித்த அரசர் மேலும் நூறு கிணறுகளை தனது சொந்த செலவில் உள்துறை அமைச்சர் அமைக்கும்படி கட்டளையிட்டார். இந்தப் பணியுடன் தொடர்புடைய அனைத்துப் பொறுப்பும் தெனாலி ராமனிடம் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டது. - கட்டுரையாளர்: ஆங்கிலத் துறை முன்னாள் உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்
