Once upon a time a pair of crocodiles lived in a river. One day they saw a monkey sitting on a tree and enjoying some sweet fruits. Seeing this, the female crocodile asked her partner to bring her the monkey so she can have a good meal of monkey’s heart. At first the male crocodile was a bit reluctant since he did know how to climb a tree but his wife was stubborn.

The male crocodile finally thought of an idea and went to the monkey. He tried to convince the monkey to come down and give him some fruits too. But the monkey threw it from the top. When his idea did not work, he thought of another one. He told the monkey about an island nearby that has got better and more delicious fruits than these.

The greedy monkey wanted to have them but did not know how to swim. Hence it hesitated. Then the crocodile offered to take the monkey on his back. The monkey, without thinking twice, accepted the idea and sat on its back. But as soon as they entered deep water, crocodile told the monkey that he had been fooled. The monkey was shocked. But monkey, owing to his cunningness, told the crocodile that he had left his heart on the tree and they will have to go back. Foolish crocodile believed it and took the monkey back after which he escaped by jumping to top of the tree.

முதலையும் குரங்கும்

ஒரு காலத்தில் ஒரு ஜோடி முதலைகள் ஒரு நதியில் வசித்து வந்தன. ஒருநாள் மரத்தின் மீது உட்கார்ந்தபடி சில இனிப்பான பழங்களை ரசித்து சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த குரங்கு ஒன்றை அந்த முதலைகள் பார்த்தன. அதில் பெண் முதலை தன் துணையிடம் அந்தக் குரங்கின் இதயத்தை உணவாக்கிக் ​ கொள்வதற்காக அதை தன்னிடம் அழைத்து கொண்டு வருமாறு கேட்டுக்கொண்டது.

முதலில் அந்த ஆண் முதலை சிறிது தயங்கியது. காரணம் அதற்கு மரம் ஏறத் தெரியாது. ஆனால் பெண் முதலை பிடிவாதம் பிடித்தது.

அந்த ஆண் முதலைக்கு இறுதியில் ஒரு யோசனை தோன்றியது. அது குரங்கிடம் சென்றது. குரங்கு கீழே இறங்கி வந்து தனக்கும் கொஞ்சம் பழங்களை கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூறி அதை இந்த யோசனையை ஏற்க வைக்க முயற்சித்தது. ஆனால் அந்தக் குரங்கோ கொஞ்சம் பழங்களை மேலிருந்தே தூக்கி எறிந்தது. தனது இந்த யோசனை பலிக்கவில்லை என்றதும் முதலைக்கு வேறு யோசனை வந்தது. அருகில் இருக்கும் தீவுகளில் இதை விட சிறப்பான அதிக சுவையுள்ள பழங்கள் உள்ளன என்று குரங்கிடம் கூறியது.

அந்த பேராசைக்கார குரங்குக்கு அந்தப் பழங்களை அடைய வேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பம் இருந்தாலும் அதற்கு நீந்தத் தெரியாதே. எனவே அது தயங்கியது. உடனே அந்த முதலை அந்தக் குரங்கை தன் முதுகில் ஏற்றிச்செல்ல முன்வந்தது. அந்த குரங்கும் மறுசிந்தனையின்றி, இந்த யோசனையை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு முதலையின் முதுகில் உட்கார்ந்தது. ஆழமான தண்ணீர்ப் பகுதிக்குச் சென்றதும் அந்த குரங்கு முட்டாளாக்கப்பட்டது என்பதை முதலை கூறியது. குரங்கு அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தது.

ஆனால் அது தந்திரமாக அந்த முதலையிடம் தனது இதயத்தை மரத்திலேயே விட்டு விட்டு வந்ததாகவும் அதை மீண்டும் எடுத்துவரச் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்றும் கூறியது. முட்டாள் முதலை இதனை நம்பி அந்தக் குரங்கை கிளம்பிய இடத்துக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றது. குரங்கு அங்கிருந்து குதி​த்து மரத்தின் மேல் ஏறித் தப்பியது.
