The Obedient Ascetic
In the marketplace, Mullah Nasruddin was teaching his followers how to live by their wit, wisdom and foresight. He told them that those who heeded his words would be happy in life. A wandering ascetic in the audience grew irritated that everyone was looking on with open-mouthed admiration at such a simpleton. So he shouted from the crowd: “They listen to you for the one-eyed is king in the land of the blind. But I can tell you one thing: Here is one man you cannot move with cunning words. And even less will I obey a fool like you!”
“Is that so?” mused Mullah. “Then why don’t you come up here to prove it?”
The dervish consented and mounted on the podium ready to disprove Mullah. Bowing respectfully, Mullah invited him: “Please take your place here on my left.”
The dervish politely did so, bowing in return.
“No! Not here,” said Mullah, changing his mind and bowing again, “stand here on my right side.
The dervish bowed back with dignity and moved to the right.
“You know,” concluded Mullah, smirking, “despite what you claimed, I think you are a nice obedient person! Why don’t you return to your place in the audience and let me continue with my teaching?”
The audience burst into peals of laughter, realising how Mullah had subtly tricked the oversmart dervish.
When we make challenging assertions before a live audience, we should ensure we know what we are getting into, or else we will end up making public fools of ourselves, like the dervish did by inadvertently obeying all of Mullah’s wishes.
கீழ்படிந்த துறவி
அறிவு, ஞானம் மற்றும் தொலைநோக்கு பார்வை மூலம் எப்படி வாழ வேண்டும் என்பது குறித்து தனது சீடர்களுக்கு முல்லா நஸ்ருதீன் சந்தையில் சொற்பொழிவு ஆற்றிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். தன்னுடைய வார்த்தைகளுக்கு செவிசாய்ப்பவர்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருப்பார்கள் என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார்.
முல்லாவின் உரையை கேட்டபடி கூட்டத்தில் வீற்றிருந்தார் அங்குமிங்கும் அலைந்து திரியும் ஒரு துறவி. இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு முட்டாளை எல்லோரும் வாய் திறந்து ரசிக்கின்றனரே என்றுஅவர் எரிச்சல் அடைந்தார். அதனால் அவர் கூட்டத்தில் இருந்து கத்தினார். இந்த மக்கள் உங்கள் பேச்சைக் கேட்கிறார்கள், ஏனென்றால் பார்வையற்றோர் தேசத்தில் ஒற்றைக் கண்ணன் மன்னன். ஆனால், நான் ஒன்று சொல்ல முடியும். தந்திரமான வார்த்தைகளால் வசியம் செய்ய முடியாத ஒருவன் இங்குள்ளேன். உன்னைப் போன்ற முட்டாளுக்கு நான் கீழ்ப்படிய மாட்டேன்!
அப்படியா? முல்லா யோசித்தார். அப்படியானால், அதை நிரூபிக்க நீங்கள் ஏன் இங்கு வரக் கூடாது என்றார்.
துறவி ஒப்புக் கொண்டு, முல்லா தவறு என நிரூபிக்க தயாராக மேடையில் ஏறினார். மரியாதையுடன் முல்லா அவரை அழைத்தார். தயவுசெய்து இங்கே என் இடதுபக்கத்தில் உங்கள் இருக்கையில் அமருங்கள் என்றார் முல்லா. துறவி பணிவுடன் அவ்வாறு செய்தார், பதிலுக்கு வணங்கினார். இல்லை! இங்கே இல்லை என்று முல்லா சொன்னார், மனதை மாற்றிக் கொண்டு, மீண்டும் குனிந்து, இங்கே என் வலது பக்கத்தில் நில்லுங்கள் என்றார். துறவி கண்ணியத்துடன் மீண்டும் குனிந்து வலது பக்கம் நகர்ந்தார்.
நீங்கள் என்ன கூறினாலும், நீங்கள்ஒரு நல்ல கீழ்ப்படியும் நபர் என்று நான் நினைக்கிறேன்! நீங்கள் ஏன்பார்வையாளர்களில் உங்கள் இடத்திற்குத் திரும்பி, எனது போதனையைத் தொடர அனுமதிக்கக் கூடாது? என்று முல்லா சிரித்துக் கொண்டே முடித்தார்.
அதிமேதாவி துறவியை முல்லா எப்படி நுட்பமாக கையாண்டார் என்பதை உணர்ந்த பார்வையாளர்கள் சிரிப்பலையில் மூழ்கினர்.
நேரடி பார்வையாளர்களுக்கு முன்பாக சவாலான உரைவீச்சு நிகழ்த்தும்போது எதை பேசுகிறோம் என்பதை நாம் உறுதிபடுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இல்லையெனில் முல்லாவின் அனைத்து கட்டளைகளுக்கும் அந்த அதிமேதாவி துறவி கீழ்ப்படிந்ததைப் போல, பொதுவில் நம்மை நாமே முட்டாளாக்கிக் கொள்வோம்.
