A hand ful of Grain
Vinayak was a wise man living in the Vijayanagara Kingdom. He was very proud of his accomplishments and loved showing off his intelligence. He enjoyed insulting people who came to face his challenges and failed. One day he put up a board outside his house, offering anyone 1000 gold coins if they could outsmart his wit, wisdom and intelligence.
Many scholars took up his challenge, but he could not be defeated. That is until one day a man selling firewood arrived. He started shouting on top of his voice. Irritated with his shouting, Vinayak asked the man to sell him his firewood.
The man said he would sell him his firewood in exchange for a ‘handful grain.’ He agreed and asked him to put the firewood in the backyard. However, the man insisted that he had not understood what he had actually asked for. He then said that if he couldn’t pay him the exact price of a ‘handful grain’, then he must take down his challenge board and give him 1000 gold coins. Hearing these words, Vinayak started getting frustrated with the vendor. After hours of arguing, they decided to go to the provincial court.
The judge heard what Vinayak had to say and then asked the firewood vendor to give his explanation. The vendor explained that he wanted a ‘handful grain’ which means a singular grain that would fill a hand. Since he failed to understand this, Vinayak was beaten and therefore he needed to take down his board and give the vendor the 1000 gold coins.
After Vinayak took down his board, he asked the vendor who he really was. Taking off his disguise, Tenali Raman revealed himself! He wanted to teach the arrogant and snobbish Vinayak a lesson in being humble. Lesson learned!
ஒரு கைப்பிடி நிறைய தானியம்
விநாயக், விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்யத்தில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு புத்திசாலி. அவர் தனது சாதனைகளைப் பற்றி மிகவும் பெருமிதம் கொண்டார் மற்றும் அவரது புத்திசாலித்தனத்தை பறைசாற்றிக் கொள்வதில் ஆர்வமாக இருந்தார். தான் விடுத்த சவால்களை எதிர்கொள்ள வந்தவர்கள் தோல்வியுற்ற போது அவர்களை அவமதித்து மகிழ்ந்தார்.
ஒரு நாள் அவர் தனது வீட்டிற்கு வெளியே ஒரு பலகையை தொங்கவிட்டார். யாரேனும் ஞானத்திலும் புத்திசாலித்தனத்திலும் தன்னை விடசிறந்து விளங்கினால் ஆயிரம் பொற்காசுகளை அவருக்கு வழங்குவதாக அதில் எழுதினார்.
பல அறிஞர்கள் சவாலை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டனர், ஆனால் அவரை தோற்கடிக்க முடியவில்லை. ஒரு நாள், விறகு விற்கும் ஒருவர் வந்தார். உரத்த குரலில் அவர் சத்தம் எழுப்பினார். அவரது கூச்சலில் எரிச்சல் அடைந்த விநாயக், அந்த நபர் தன்னிடம் விறகு விற்கும்படி சொன்னார்.
ஒரு கைப்பிடி தானியத்திற்கு ஈடாக விறகுகளை விற்பதாக அந்த நபர் கூறினார். அதற்கு சம்மதித்து விறகுகளை கொல்லைப்புறத்தில் வைக்கச் சொன்னார்விநாயக். இருப்பினும், அவர் உண்மையில் என்ன கேட்டார் என்பது விநாயகிற்கு புரியவில்லை என்று அந்த நபர் வலியுறுத்தினார்.
ஒரு கைப்பிடி தானியத்தின் சரியான விலையை கொடுக்க முடியாவிட்டால், சவால் பலகையை கழற்றி 1000 தங்க நாணயங்களைக் கொடுக்க வேண்டும் என்று வியாபாரி கூறினார். இந்த சொற்களைக் கேட்ட விநாயக், விரக்தியடைந்தார். பல மணிநேர வாக்குவாதத்திற்குப் பிறகு, நீதிமன்றம் செல்ல இருவரும் முடிவு செய்தனர்.
விநாயக் கூறியதைக் கேட்ட நீதிபதி, விறகு வியாபாரியிடம் விளக்கம் கேட்டார். தனக்கு ஒரு ‘கைப்பிடி தானியம்’ வேண்டும், அதாவது ஒரு கையை நிரப்பும் அளவு உள்ள ஒற்றை தானியம் என்று விளக்கினார் வியாபாரி. இதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளத் தவறியதால், விநாயக் தோற்றுப்போனார். எனவே அவர் தனது பலகையைக் கழற்றி வியாபாரியிடம் 1000 தங்க நாணயங்களைக் கொடுக்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று.
விநாயக் தனது பலகையை கழற்றிய பிறகு உண்மையில் வியாபாரி யார் என்றுகேட்டார். மாறுவேடத்தைக் களைந்துதெனாலிராமன் தன்னை வெளிப்படுத்தினார். ஆணவமும், தலைக்கனமும் கொண்ட விநாயக்கிற்கு அடக்கம் எனும் பாடம் கற்பிக்க விரும்பினார். பாடம் கற்பிக்கப்பட்டது!
