Arabian Nights Folktales: Fisherman and the ifrit Abu was a fisherman. He stayed on the beach, and had been fishing for as long as he could remember.
Now, Abu was almost 80 years old. He would not venture too into the sea in his boat. Instead, he would throw his net out from the shore; and that too, only three times a day. He would eat some of the fish, and sell the rest for a little money.
One day, he went out to the sea in the morning. He threw his net over the water. After some time, he could feel something heavy trapped in the net. The fisherman pulled the net, and saw that there was a dead donkey trapped in the net. “Oh no!” he cried, “All this effort for a dead donkey! What will I do? What can I eat today?”
He cast his net once again. After a while he could sense something was trapped in it. With significant effort, Abu drew the net. He found a jar full of sand. “Oh no!” he cried again, “All this effort for a jar full of sand! What will I do?” He prayed to Solomon to give him strength and better luck.
“My lord Solomon, I will surely die of hunger today. Please protect this faithful devotee of yours!”
With a prayer on his lips, Abu threw the net one last time. This time something even heavier got trapped in the net. He saw it was a brass bottle.
What was inside it was the least one he expected.

அரேபிய இரவுகள் நாடோடிக்கதைகள்: மீனவனும் குட்டிச் சாத்தானும் அபு ஒரு மீனவர். கடற்கரையில் வசித்தவர். நினைவு தெரிந்த நாளிலிருந்து அவர் மீன் பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
அப்போது அவருக்கு வயது 80. தன் படகில் கடலுக்குள் செல்ல அவர் துணிவதில்லை. கரையிலிருந்தே தன் வலையை வீசுவார். அது கூட ஒரு நாளைக்கு இருமுறைமட்டும்தான். கிடைக்கும் மீன்களில் சிலவற்றை சாப்பிடுவர். மீதியை விற்று கொஞ்சம் பணம் சம்பாதிப்பார்.
ஒரு நாள் காலையில் கடலுக்குச் சற்று உட்புறமாகச் சென்று நீரின் மீது தன் வலையை வீசினார். சிறிது நேரம் கழித்து அந்த வலையில் கனமாக ஏதோ சிக்கி இருந்ததை அவரால் உணர முடிந்தது. அவர் வலையை இழுத்தார். ஒரு கழுதையின் சடலம் அதில் சிக்கி இருந்தது. 'ஐயோ, இவ்வளவு முயற்சியும் இந்த இறந்த கழுதைக்காகவா? நான் என்ன செய்வேன்? நான் இன்று எதை உண்பேன்?'
மீண்டும் தன் வலையை வீசினார். சிறிது நேரத்திற்குப் பிறகு வலையில் ஏதோ சிக்கியதை உணர்ந்தார். கணிசமான முயற்சிக்குப் பின் வலையை அவர் மேலே இழுத்தார். அதில் ஒரு ஜாடி நிறைய மணல் இருந்தது. 'ஐயோ' என்று மீண்டும் கத்தினார். 'எனது இவ்வளவு முயற்சியும் ஒரு ஜாடி மணலுக்காகவா? நான் என்ன செய்வேன்?'.
தனக்கு வலிமையையும் அதிர்ஷ்டத்தையும் அளிக்கும்படி சாலமனை வேண்டினார். 'என் இறைவன் சாலமனே, இன்று பசியால் நான் நிச்சயம் இறந்துவிடுவேன். உங்களது இந்த நம்பிக்கையுள்ள பக்தனை தயவு செய்து காப்பாற்றுங்கள்'.
பிரார்த்தித்துக் கொண்டே அபு இறுதி முறையாக வலையை வீசினார். இந்த முறை முன்பைவிட அதிக கனமான ஏதோ வகையில்சிக்கியது. அது ஒரு தாமிரக் குப்பி என்பதைக் கண்டார். அதற்குள் இருந்தது அவர் சிறிதும் எதிர்பாராத ஒன்று.
