While Tenali raman was enquiring who is responsible for the death of the goat Mason said, ‘I am being blamed unnecessarily. The real culprits are those labourers who spoilt the mortar by adding excess of water to the mortar, due to which the wall could not be strong and fell down. After listening to the mason's reply, soldiers were sent to call the labourers. When the workers came to know about the whole matter after reaching there, the workers said, "The person who gave me the pot to pour water in the mortar, is the real culprit. That pot was huge. Due to this, the water could not be guessed and the water in the mortar became excess.
On being asked by Tenali raman, the person who added more water to the mortar said, "That big pot was given to him by the shepherd. Due to this, more water got into the mixture and the wall became weak. "What then, looking at the shepherd, Tenali raman said, "It is your fault in this. It is because of you that the goat died." When the matter turned around and came to the shepherd, he could not say anything and silently went towards his house. The shepherd regretted his lending the pot. Out of goodwill he helped the neighbour but when he was left without any compensation for the dead goat, it saddened him.
Tenali Raman could understand his grievance. He adviced the shepherd to tell in the court that the particular pot was received as an exchange for his goat's milk from the neighbour and so he is the real culprit. The Shepherd was given suitable compensation for the dead goat by the neighbour. The neighbour, Mason, labourers all were levied heavy fine for their negligence and irresponsibility and extra fine for putting the blame on others without conscience.
குற்றவாளிகளுக்கு தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டது
ஆடு கொல்லப்பட்டதற்கு யார் பொறுப்பு ஏற்றாக வேண்டும் என்பது குறித்து தெனாலி ராமன் விசாரணை நடத்தியபோது கொத்தனார், “என் மீது தேவையில்லாமல் குற்றம் சாட்டப்படுகிறது. சுவர் வலுவின்றி இடிந்து விழுந்ததால், சாந்தில் அதிகப்படியான தண்ணீரைச் சேர்த்துக் கெடுத்த தொழிலாளிகள்தான் உண்மையான குற்றவாளிகள்” என்றார்.
இதற்குப் பிறகு, சாந்தில் அதிக தண்ணீர் ஊற்றிய தொழிலாளர்களை அரசவைக்கு விசாரணைக்கு அழைத்து வர வீரர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிடப்பட்டது. தண்ணீர் கலந்த தொழிலாளர்கள் நீதிமன்றத்தை அடைந்தவுடன், "சாந்துக்கு தண்ணீர் ஊற்றுவதற்கு பானையை கொடுத்தவர்தான் உண்மையான குற்றவாளி. அந்த பானை மிகப் பெரியது. இதனால் தண்ணீரின் அளவை ஊகிக்க முடியவில்லை. சாந்தில் கலக்கப்பட்ட தண்ணீர் அதிகமாகியது” என்றனர்
தெனாலி ராமன் மேற்கொண்டு இது குறித்து விசாரித்தபோது, சாந்தில் அதிக தண்ணீர் சேர்த்தவர், "அந்த பெரிய பானை ஆடு மேய்ப்பவர் கொடுத்தது. இதனால், கலவையில் அதிக தண்ணீர் வந்து சுவர் வலுவிழந்தது" என்றார். இதையடுத்து மேய்ப்பனைப் பார்த்து தெனாலி ராமன், “ஆக இது உன் தவறுதான். உன்னால்தான் அந்த ஆடு இறந்துவிட்டது" என்றார்.
விஷயம் தலைகீழாக மாறி மேய்ப்பனிடம் வந்ததும் எதுவும் பேச முடியாமல் அமைதியாகத் தன் வீட்டை நோக்கிச் சென்றார். பானையைக் கடனாகக் கொடுத்ததற்காக மேய்ப்பன் வருந்தினார். நல்லெண்ணத்தால் அண்டை வீட்டாருக்கு செய்த உதவியினாலேயே இறந்து போன தனது ஆட்டுக்குரிய இழப்பீடு எதுவும் கிடைக்காமல் போனதே என எண்ணி வருந்தினார்.
தெனாலி ராமனால் ஆடு மேய்ப்பனின் மனக்குறையை புரிந்து கொள்ள முடிந்தது. குறிப்பிட்ட பானை தனது ஆட்டுப்பாலுக்கு மாற்றாக பக்கத்து வீட்டுக்காரரிடம் இருந்து பெறப்பட்டது என்றும், அதனால் அவர்தான் உண்மையான குற்றவாளி என்றும் அரசவையில் சொல்லும்படி மேய்ப்பனுக்கு அறிவுரை கூறினார்.
அண்டை வீட்டாரால் இறந்த ஆட்டுக்கான உரிய இழப்பீடு ஆடு மேய்ப்பனுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. அலட்சியம் மற்றும் பொறுப்பற்ற தன்மைக்காகப் பக்கத்து வீட்டுக்காரர், கொத்தனார், தொழிலாளர்கள் ஆகியோருக்கு கடுமையான அபராதமும், மனசாட்சியின்றி மற்றவர்கள் மீது பழியை சுமத்தியதற்காக கூடுதல் அபராதமும் விதிக்கப்பட்டது.
