The Golden Crop

Once an attendant in Akbar’s court while dusting, broke one of Akbar’s favourite flower vase. When he was questioned, the servant did not admit his mistake and lied to avoid punishment. But the truth was found out and servant was expelled from Akbar’s court because of the lie. Birbal argued that it is general human tendency to lie, not just to cover flaws or bad deeds but also to not to break the other person’s heart.

Unable to understand Birbal’s philosophy, and mistaking him as supporting the lying servant Akbar asked him also to leave the court. That was when Birbal decided to teach Akbar the depth of his argument. He asked a goldsmith to prepare a strand of golden wheat and took it to Akbar. He informed the court that it was given by a saint to him and if they grew it in the land, it will give a full crop of golden wheat strands. But there was an important condition,only a person who has never lied in his life can do so.

When all courtiers backed off and Akbar himself hesitated to grow the strand. Birbal at this suitable moment repeated his argument and everyone agreed that they have all spoken a lie at some point in their lives.

அக்பரின் அரசவையில் ஒருமுறை உதவியாளர் ஒருவர் தூசி தட்டும் போது அக்பருக்குப் பிடித்த மலர் குவளையை உடைத்துவிட்டார். அவரிடம் விசாரித்தபோது, அந்த உதவியாளர் தனது தவறை ஒப்புக் கொள்ளவில்லை.

மேலும் தண்டனையில் இருந்து தப்பிக்க பொய் உரைத்தார். ஆனால், உண்மை கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. பொய் சொன்ன காரணத்துக்காக அக்பரின் அரசவையில் இருந்து அந்த பணியாளர் வெளியேற்றப்பட்டார்.

பொய் சொல்வது மனிதனின் பொதுவான இயல்பு, குற்றங்களையும் தீய செயல்களையும் மறைப்பதற்காக மட்டுமல்லாமல், மற்றவரின் மனதை காயப்படுத்திவிடக் கூடாது என்பதற்காகவும் பொய் சொல்லப்படுவதுண்டு என்று பீர்பால் வாதிட்டார்.

பீர்பாலின் தத்துவத்தைப் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியாத அக்பர் பீர்பால் பொய்யுரைக்கும் பணியாளருக்கு ஆதரவு தருவதாக கருதி அவரையும் அரசவையை விட்டு வெளியேறச் சொன்னார். அக்பருக்கு தனது வாதத்தின் ஆழத்தை கற்பிக்க பீர்பால் முடிவு செய்தார்.

ஒரு பொற்கொல்லரிடம் தங்கக் கோதுமை இழையைத் தயாரிக்கச் சொல்லி அதை அக்பரிடம் எடுத்துச் சென்றார். இது தனக்கு ஒரு துறவியால் வழங்கப்பட்டதாகவும், அதை நிலத்தில் வளர்த்தால், அது தங்க கோதுமை இழைகளின் முழு விளைச்சலைக் கொடுக்கும் என்றும் பீர்பால் அரசவையில் தெரிவித்தார்.

ஆனால் அதற்கு ஒரு முக்கியமான நிபந்தனை இருந்தது, வாழ்நாளில் பொய்யே சொல்லாத ஒருவரால் மட்டுமே அவ்வாறு செய்ய முடியும். அரசவையினர் அனைவரும் பின்வாங்கினர். அக்பரும், இழையை வளர்க்கத் தயங்கினார். பீர்பால் தக்க சமயத்தில் தனது வாதத்தை மீண்டும் எடுத்துரைத்தார். வாழ்க்கையில் ஏதோ ஒரு கட்டத்தில் தாங்கள் பொய் பேசியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதை அனைவரும் ஒப்புக்கொண்டனர்.
