Whose Mango Tree is It?

Once, two brothers, Balu and Ravi, were fighting over the ownership of a Mango Tree. Balu said the Mango tree was his; while Ravi said he owned it. Unable to find a way out, they decided to ask Birbal, the most intelligent minister in King Akbar's court for help. Birbal analysed the situation and told the brothers to remove all the mangoes, share them between the two brothers, then cut the tree in two equal halves.

Upon hearing Birbal, Balu noded, while Ravi pled not to cut the tree for he had nurtured it for three whole years. Birbal found who the real owner of the tree was. He said, “The tree belongs to Ravi because the very thought of cutting it down troubled him. Someone who has cared for it for three years won’t cut it down immediately."

ஒருமுறை, பாலு மற்றும் ரவி ஆகிய இரண்டு சகோதரர்கள், ஒரு மா மரத்தின் உரிமைக்காகச் சண்டையிட்டனர். பாலு மாமரம் தன்னுடையது என்றார். ரவியும் அது தனக்கு சொந்தமானது என்று வாதிட்டார். தீர்வுக்கு வழி தெரியாமல் அக்பரின் அரசவையில் மிகுந்த புத்திசாலி அமைச்சரான பீர்பாலிடம் உதவி கேட்க இருவரும் முடிவு செய்தனர்.

பீர்பால் நிலைமையை ஆராய்ந்து, அனைத்து மாம்பழங்களையும் அகற்றி, இரண்டு சகோதரர்களிடையே பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்றும், பின்னர் மரத்தை இரண்டு சம பாகங்களாக வெட்ட வேண்டும் என்று சகோதரர்களிடம் கூறினார். பீர்பால் சொன்னதை கேட்டதும், பாலு தலையசைத்தார், அதே நேரத்தில் ரவி மரத்தை வெட்ட வேண்டாம் என்று மன்றாடினார்.

ஏனென்றால் தான் அந்த மாமரத்தை மூன்று ஆண்டுகளாக வளர்த்து வந்ததாக கூறினார். மரத்தின் உண்மையான உரிமையாளர் யார் என்பதை பீர்பால் கண்டுபிடித்துவிட்டார். பிறகு பீர்பால் இப்படி கூறினார், "மரம் ரவிக்கு சொந்தமானது. ஏனென்றால் அதை வெட்ட வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணமே அவரை தொந்தரவு செய்தது. மூன்று வருடங்கள் தான் பராமரித்த மரத்தை வெட்டுவதற்குக் கண்டிப்பாக அவர் உடனே சம்மதம் தர மாட்டார்".
