Unique Paintings by Tenali Raman
King Krishnadeva Raya wanted to decorate the walls of his palace with paintings. He entrusted this work to a famous painter. It took a year for the painting work to be completed. After the completion of the work, the king went to see the painting with his eight stalwarts and courtiers.
The painter has accomplished a very good work. The king was greatly influenced by the paintings of the artist. He was proud of himself that he got such a skilled painter. Then Tenali Raman showed a picture to the king, in which a particular part was missing. The king was surprised. But with a sense of ignoring that shortcoming, he said to Tenali Raman, “You imagine that part, that is the speciality of this painting.
Hearing the answer, Tenali Raman was very surprised. He thought, It is good that the king has got the painting done by a famous painter. But the mistake must be accepted. He wanted to prove to the king that one should always accept the truth, however bitter it may be.
After two weeks Tenali Raman made a grand announcement in the royal court that he is conducting an exhibition of his paintings which is very modern and challenging. He invited all the courtiers to come and visit his gallery. The king went to see the exhibition at the behest of Tenali Raman and was surprised to see what he saw there.
Tenali Raman had put unique paintings all around. Some of the paintings had hands, some had feet… the king asked, “Sorry, I did not like this painting. You have made different parts, where is the whole body?” Tenali Raman smiled and said, “Your Majesty, people should imagine that part for themselves. That is the beauty of these pictures.” The king remembered what he had said earlier. He understood Tenali Raman's gesture and smiled in embarrassment.

மன்னர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் அரண்மனை சுவர்களை ஓவியங்களால் அலங்கரிக்க விரும்பினார். இந்தப் பணியை ஒரு பிரபல ஓவியரிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார். வண்ணம் பூசும் வேலை முடிய ஒரு வருடம் ஆனது. வேலை முடிந்ததும், அரசர் தனது எட்டு ஜாம்பவான்கள் மற்றும் அரசவை உறுப்பினர்களுடன் ஓவியத்தைப் பார்க்கச் சென்றார்.
ஓவியர் சிறப்பாக பணி செய்திருந்தார். கலைஞர் தீட்டிய ஓவியங்களால் மன்னர் பெரிதும் கவரப்பட்டார். இப்படி ஒரு திறமையான ஓவியர் கிடைத்ததை நினைத்து அவர் பெருமிதம் அடைந்தார். பின்னர் தெனாலிராமன் மன்னரிடம் ஒரு படத்தைக் காட்டினார், அதில் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட பகுதி காணவில்லை. அரசர் ஆச்சரியமடைந்தார். ஆனால், அந்தக் குறையைப் புறக்கணிக்கும் விதமாக தெனாலி ராமனிடம், “அந்தப் பகுதியை நீங்களே கற்பனை செய்து பார்த்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள், அதுதான் இந்த ஓவியத்தின் சிறப்பு” என்றார்.
இந்த பதிலைக் கேட்ட தெனாலி ராமன் ஆச்சரியப்பட்டார். அவர் நினைத்தார், அரசர் ஒரு பிரபல ஓவியரால் ஓவியம் வரைந்தது நல்லது. ஆனால், தவறை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். எவ்வளவு கசப்பாக இருந்தாலும் உண்மையை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று அரசரிடம் நிரூபிக்க வேண்டும் என்று தனது மனதுக்குள் முடிவு செய்தார்.
இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்குப் பிறகு, தெனாலி ராமன் தான் தீட்டிய ஓவியங்களின் கண்காட்சியை நடத்தப் போவதாக அரசவையில் அறிவித்தார். அந்த கண்காட்சியில் இடம்பெறப் போகிற ஓவீயங்கள் மிகவும் நவீனமானவை, சவாலானவை என்றார். அனைத்து அரசவை உறுப்பினர்களும் தனது ஓவிய கூடத்திற்கு வருமாறு அழைப்பு விடுத்தாரதெனாலி ராமனின் அழைப்பை ஏற்று கண்காட்சிக்கு மன்னர் சென்றபோது அங்கே தான் கண்ட விஷயங்களால் திகைத்துப் போனார்.
தெனாலி ராமன் தனது தனித்துவமான ஓவியங்களைச் சுற்றிலும் காட்சிக்கு வைத்திருந்தார். சில ஓவியங்களுக்கு கைகள் இருந்தன, சிலவற்றுக்கு கால்கள் இருந்தன... மன்னர் கேட்டார், "மன்னிக்கவும், இந்த ஓவியம் எனக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை. நீங்கள் வெவ்வேறு பாகங்களை உருவாக்கி உள்ளீர்கள். முழு உடலும் எங்கே?”
