The merchant was surprised. 'How can mice eat iron,' he thought to himself. but he said, Don't feel sorry, Naren. The mice have always proved a menace to everyone. Naren was happy that the merchant believed his words.
While taking leave from his friend, the merchant said to Naren,I'm going to temple to make an offering of laddoos. Could you please send your son with me? I would like to send some laddoos for you also.
Naren asked his son to go along with the merchant. The merchant instead of taking the boy to temple, took him to a nearby hill and tied him with a big rock and came back home. When Naren didn't see his son return, he asked the merchant where his son was.
The merchant said While your son was looking after my shoes outside the temple, a big vulture swooped down upon him and carried him away. What nonsense! shouted Naren. How can a vulture carry off a young boy?
Ultimately the matter had to be taken to the court. The Judge shouted at the merchant, How can a bird carry away a young boy in his talons? The merchant said, If mice can eat my iron balance, why can't a bird carry away a grown up boy?.
The judge then asked Naren to tell the truth. At last, Naren admitted his guilt. The judge ordered him to return the iron balance to the merchant. He asked the merchant to return the boy to Naren. He condemned Naren for his act.

வணிகன் வியப்படைந்தான், எலிகள் எப்படி இரும்பை உண்ணும்? என நினைத்தான். என்றாலும் வருத்தப்படாதே நரேன். எப்போதுமே இந்த எலிகள் தொல்லைதான் என்றான்.
தான் கூறியதை வணிகன் நம்பியது கண்டு நரேன் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தான். தன் நண்பனிடம் இருந்து விடைபெறும் போது அந்த வணிகன், நான் கோயிலுக்கு சென்றுலட்டுகளை நைவேத்தியம் செய்ய போகிறேன். உன் மகனை என்னுடன் அனுப்ப முடியுமா? உனக்கு சில லட்டுகளை அவனிடம் கொடுத்தனுப்ப விரும்புகிறேன் என்றான்.
நரேனும் தன் மகனை வணிகனுடன் அனுப்பினான். வணிகன் அந்த சிறுவனை கோயிலுக்கு அழைத்து செல்லாமல் அருகில் இருந்த ஒரு குன்றுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று,அவனை ஒரு பாறையில் கட்டி வைத்துவிட்டு, தன் வீட்டுக்கு திரும்பினான். தன் மகன் வீடு திரும்பாததால் நரேன் அந்த வணிகனிடம் தன் மகன் எங்கே என்று கேட்டான்.
அதற்கு அந்த வணிகன் கோயிலுக்கு வெளியே உன் மகன் எனது காலணிகளை பாதுகாத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது ஒரு பெரிய பருந்து வந்து அவனைத் தூக்கிச் சென்று விட்டது என்றான். என்ன உளறுகிறாய்? ஒரு பருந்து எப்படி ஒரு சிறுவனை தூக்கி செல்ல முடியும்? என்று கத்தினான் நரேன்.
வழக்கு நீதிமன்றத்துக்குச் சென்றது. ஒரு பறவை எப்படி ஒரு சிறுவனை தன் நகங்களால் தூக்கிச் செல்ல முடியும்? என்று வணிகனிடம் கோபமாக கேட்டார் நீதிபதி. அதற்கு அந்த வணிகன், எலிகளால் இரும்புத் தராசை உண்ண முடியும் என்றால் ஒரு பறவையால் ஏன் ஒரு சிறுவனை தூக்கிச் செல்ல முடியாது? என்று கேட்டான்.
நீதிபதி நரேனை உண்மை கூறுமாறு கட்டளையிட்டார். இறுதியில் நரேந்திரன் குற்றத்தை ஒப்புக்கொண்டான். வணிகனின் இரும்புத் தராசை அவனிடம் திருப்பித் தருமாறு நரேனுக்கு நீதிபதி உத்தரவிட்டார். வணிகனும் அந்தச் சிறுவனை நரேனிடம் ஒப்படைக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் கட்டளையிட்டார். நரேனின் செயலுக்காக அவனைக் கண்டித்தார்.
