The Value of Patience!

Emperor Timur the Lame was ageing and wished to ensure that his place in history was secured. So he called his favourite jester Mullah Nasruddin to come and answer his queries. “Tell me Mullah,” he said, “what do I need to do to be remembered as a great ruler?”

“You have all the gifts in the universe but only need a little more patience, my Lord,” replied Mullah. “I see,” said the Sultan, “and what else do I need?”

“To keep your calm and composure, your Highness,” continued Mullah.

“Okay,” said Timur, “and what else?” “Never grow tired while listening, O Master,” Mullah said.

“Is that all?” Timur queried. “More than anything you must be patient, O Sultan,” Mullah continued. “That’s enough!” Timur said, his patience beginning to be tested.

“Patience and an even temper will lay the world at your feet, O Great One!” Mullah seemed to ignore the message on Timur’s face. The Sultan was livid: “Are you mocking me, you scoundrel? How many times will you repeat the same stupid thing? You imply I am too dumb to understand? Guards! Seize him and place his head on the chopping block!” the Sultan thundered.

“You see what I mean?” whispered Mullah. “I only repeated a simple piece of good advice a couple of times and you already lost your patience!” Once again, Timur got the point and Mullah Nasruddin narrowly escaped from death!.

Yet again, the point about quick thinking comes across. Wit and quick thinking can indeed pull us out of trouble repeatedly. But it would be better still to avoid trouble of such kind, but because Mullah selflessly told such realistic facts to the king, the Sultan liked Mullah very much!

பொறுமையின் மதிப்பு!

பேரரசர் தைமூர் தி லாமுக்கு வயதாகி விட்டதால் வரலாற்றில் தனது இடத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க விரும்பினார். எனவே தனது கேள்விகளுக்கு பதிலளிக்க வருமாறு அவருக்கு பிடித்த நகைச்சுவையாளர் முல்லா நஸ்ருதீனை அழைத்தார். சொல்லுங்கள் முல்லா, நான் ஒரு சிறந்த ஆட்சியாளராக நினைவுகூரப்படுவதற்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்? என மன்னர் கேட்டார்.

பிரபஞ்சத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து வரங்களும் உங்களுக்கு கிடைத்தாகிவிட்டது. ஆனால் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் பொறுமை வேண்டும், என் ஆண்டவரே என்று முல்லா பதிலளித்தார். அப்படியா, எனக்கு வேறு என்ன வேண்டும்? என்று சுல்தான் கேட்டார். உங்கள் அமைதியையும் நிதானத்தையும் தக்க வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும், பேரரசே என்று முல்லா தொடர்ந்தார். சரி, வேறு என்ன? எனக் கேட்டார் தைமூர்.

கவனிக்கும்போது ஒருபோது சோர்வடைய வேண்டாம் மாமன்னா என்றார் முல்லா. அவ்வளவுதானா? தைமூர் கேட்டார். எல்லாவற்றையும் விட நீங்கள் பொறுமையாக இருக்க வேண்டும், ஓ சுல்தான் மீண்டும் முல்லா வலியுறுத்தினார்.

போதும் போதும் என இம்முறை தைமூர் கூறுகையில், அவரது பொறுமை சோதிக்கப்படத் தொடங்கிவிட்டது. பொறுமையும் சீரான மனநிலையும் உலகை உங்கள் காலடியில் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்க்கும், ஐயா என முல்லா சொன்னபோது தைமூரின் முகம் வெளிப்படுத்திய செய்தியை முல்லா புறக்கணித்தது போல் தோன்றியது.

சுல்தான் கோபத்தின் உச்சத்துக்கு சென்றுவிட்டார். என்னை ஏளனம் செய்கிறாயா அயோக்கியனே? அதே முட்டாள்தனமான விஷயத்தை எத்தனை முறை திரும்பத் திரும்பச் சொல்வாய்? நான் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியாத அளவுக்கு மக்கு என்று சொல்கிறாயா? காவலர்களே! இவனைப் பிடித்து, அவன் தலையை கொய்யும் பலகையில் கிடத்துங்கள் என ஆணையிட்டார்.

நான் சொல்ல வந்தது இப்போது புரிந்ததா முல்லா கிசுகிசுத்தார். நான் ஒரு எளிய நல்ல ஆலோசனையை ஒரிரு முறை மட்டுமே திரும்ப திரும்பச் சொன்னேன். நீங்கள் ஏற்கெனவே உங்கள் பொறுமையை இழந்துவிட்டீர்கள்! என்றார் முல்லா அமைதியாக. மீண்டும், தைமூர் அர்த்தத்தை புரிந்து கொண்டார், முல்லா மயிரிழையில் மரணத்திலிருந்து விடுவிக்கப்பட்டார்.

துரிதச் சிந்தனை பற்றிய கருத்து நமக்கு இப்போது மீண்டும் வருகிறதல்லவா. புத்திசாலித்தனமும் விரைவான சிந்தனையும் நம்மை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் சிக்கலில் இருந்து காப்பாற்றும். ஆனாலும், இதுபோன்ற பிரச்சினைகளைத் தவிர்ப்பது நல்லது!

அதேநேரம் சுயநலமில்லாமல் முல்லா இதுபோன்ற எதார்த்தமான உண்மைகளை அரசருக்கு கூறியதால் சுல்தான் முல்லாவை மிகவும் விரும்பினார்.
