The fiery drink!

In the middle of a cold winter night, Mullah Nasruddin awoke feeling thirsty. Incidentally there happened to be no water at home. Since it was a cold moonless night, Mullah wore a turban around his head, picked up a lamp and made his way towards the well to fetch some water. In his half-sleepy state, Mullah failed to notice a stone lying in the path and tripped over it. As Mullah went sprawling, the lamp knocked out of his hand and broke, spilling all the oil. Just then, his turban came off his head and fell on the lamp. As the lamp glass had broken, the turban quickly caught fire.

Snapping out of his drowsy state within a split second on feeling the scorching heat from the fire, Mullah screamed and ran around in circles, beating the turban on the ground, trying to douse the fire. To put out the fire quickly, Mullah jumped up and down on it, looking much like a madman dancing on a burning piece of cloth.

Hearing all the commotion his wife promptly rushed out to investigate who was creating such a racket. Naturally, the strange sight of her husband dancing up and down on a burning garment greeted her. “Nasruddin, what on earth are you doing?” she queried in genuine alarm. “Oh, nothing, begum! I’m just getting a drink of water,” Mullah explained without batting an eyelid.

Even in a minor or major crisis, we must always remember to keep our cool. That will allow us to focus better on tackling the problem. Mullah Nasruddin’s sangfroid under all circumstances is truly commendable and something we can all learn from.

சில்லென்ற குளிர்கால இரவின் நடுவில், முல்லா நஸ்ருதீன் தாகத்தால் தூக்கத்தில் இருந்து விழித்தார். தற்செயலாக வீட்டில் தண்ணீரே இல்லை. நிலவு இல்லாத குளிர்ந்த இரவு என்பதால், முல்லா தனது தலைப்பாகையை தலையில் கட்டினார். கையில் விளக்கை ஏந்தியபடி, தண்ணீர் எடுப்பதற்காக கிணற்றை நோக்கி நடந்தார். அரை தூக்கத்தில், பாதையில் ஒரு கல் கிடந்ததைக் கவனிக்கத் தவறி முல்லா அதன் மேல் இடரி விழுந்தார். கை, கால்களை பரப்பிக் கொண்டு முல்லா விழ விளக்கு அவரது கையிலிருந்து தவறி விழுந்து உடைந்து, எண்ணெய் முழுவதுமாக சிந்தியது. அப்போது, அவரது தலைப்பாகை அவிழ்ந்து விளக்கின் மீது விழுந்தது. விளக்கு கண்ணாடி உடைந்துவிட்டதால், தலைப்பாகை வேகமாக தீப்பிடித்தது.

சுட்டெரிக்கும் நெருப்பின் வெப்பத்தை நொடிப் பொழுதில் உணர தூக்கம் கலைந்து படாரென்று முல்லா விழிப்புநிலையடைந்தார். கத்திக் கொண்டே வட்டமாக சுற்றி சுற்றி ஓடி, தலைப்பாகையைதரையில் அடித்து, தீயை அணைக்க முயன்றார். தீயை விரைவாக அணைக்க, முல்லா அதன் மீது குதித்து, எரியும்துணியில் ஒரு பைத்தியக்காரன் நடனமாடுவதைப் போல தோற்றமளித்தார்.

கூச்சல் கேட்டு முல்லாவின் மனைவி விரைந்து வந்து இதுபோன்ற ரகளையை யார் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள் என விசாரிக்க நினைத்தார். அப்போது எரியும் ஆடையில் கணவன் மேலும் கீழும் குதித்து நடனமாடும் விசித்திரமான காட்சிதான் முல்லாவின் மனைவியை வரவேற்றது. "நஸ்ருதீன், நீங்கள் என்ன செய்கிறீர்?" என்று பதறிப்போய் மனைவி கேட்டார். "ஓ, ஒன்றுமில்லை, பேகம்! நான் தண்ணீர் குடிக்கிறேன்," என்று முல்லா எந்த உணர்ச்சியையும் வெளிக்காட்டிக் கொள்ளாமல் சொன்னார்.

நெருக்கடி சிறியதோ, பெரியதோ எதுவானாலும் நாம் எப்போதும் நம்மை சலனமின்றி வைத்திருக்க மறக்கலாகாது. இது சிக்கலை உற்று நோக்கி சமாளிக்க கைகொடுக்கும். ஆபத்து வேளையிலும் அமைதி கொள்ளும் மனதை எல்லா சூழ்நிலைகளிலும் முல்லா கொண்டிருந்தது உண்மையிலேயே பாராட்டுக்குரியது மற்றும் அனைவரும் கற்றுக்கொள்ளக்கூடிய ஒன்றாகும்.
