An Experimental Death
Tenali Raman had possessed a lot of wealth. Even the wealthy people in Vijayanagar kingdom used to approach Tenali Raman when he was in dire need of money. Tenali Raman got such huge amount by way of presentation and gifts. As a court jester, he received many gold coins as reward for his services.
There was a system of confiscation of wealth by the king when wealthy persons died in Vijayanagar kingdom. So Tenali Raman did not trust the king. He wanted to experiment the consequent happenings after his death. Whether the king will look after his family members? Will the king pay compensation to his relatives? So Tenali Raman pretended as ill and later as dead. The rumour of his 'death' spread all over Vijayanagar. The news reached the palace after some days.
Meanwhile Tenali Raman put all his money in a box. The lengthy box had holes to breath air. Tenali Raman himself laid in that box along with the cash. The officials, who reached Tenali Raman's house, confiscated the cash box and carried it to the palace. They didn't realise Tenali Raman's presence inside the box.
When the king unsealed and opened the box, he got frightened. The 'dead' Tenali Raman came out of the box alive. Tenali Raman said, " Oh Lord! I did it because I wanted to know what you will do after my death. When I die, please do not neglect my family. The old rule of confiscation of wealth has to be changed." The king became conscious about what Tenali Raman said and agreed to change the rule of the kingdom.
ஒரு பரிசோதனை மரணம்
தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு ஏராளமான செல்வம் இருந்தது. விஜயநகர் சாம்ராஜ்யத்தில் வாழ்ந்த செல்வந்தர்கள்கூட தங்களுக்கு பணத் தேவை ஏற்படும் போது தெனாலி ராமவை அணுகுவது வழக்கம். தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு இவ்வளவு செல்வம், அவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட சன்மானங்கள் மற்றும் பரிசுகள் மூலம் சேர்ந்தவையே. அரசவை விகடகவியாக திகழ்ந்த தெனாலி ராமன் தான் ஆற்றிய சேவைகளுக்கு பல தங்க நாணயங்களை வெகுமதியாகப் பெற்றார்.
விஜயநகர் சாம்ராஜ்யத்தை சேர்ந்த செல்வந்தர்கள் இறக்கும் போது அவர்களது செல்வத்தை அரசர் பறிமுதல் செய்யும் வழக்கம் பின்பற்றப்பட்டு வந்தது. ஆகவே தெனாலி ராமன் அரசரை நம்பவில்லை. தனது குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்களை மன்னர் கவனித்துக் கொள்வாரா? தனது உறவினர்களுக்கு மன்னர் இழப்பீடு அளிப்பாரா? போன்ற கேள்விகள் ராமனுக்கு எழவே தனது மரணத்திற்குப் பிறகு ஏற்படும் விளைவுகளைப் பரிசோதிக்க விரும்பினார். அதனால் தான் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டதாகவும் பின்னர் இறந்துவிட்டது போலவும் நடித்தார். அவரது ‘மரணம்' குறித்த வதந்தி விஜயநகரம் முழுவதும் பரவியது. சில நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு அரண்மனைக்கு செய்தி வந்தது.
இதற்கிடையில் தெனாலி ராமன் தான் சேர்த்துவைத்த பணத்தையெல்லாம் ஒரு பெட்டியில் வைத்தார். அந்த நீளமான பெட்டியில் காற்றை சுவாசிக்க ஏற்றார்போல் துளைகள் இருந்தன. அந்த பெட்டிக்குள் பணத்துடன் சேர்ந்து ராமனும் படுத்துக் கொண்டார். தெனாலி ராமனின் வீட்டிற்கு வந்த அதிகாரிகள், பணப்பெட்டியை பறிமுதல் செய்து அரண்மனைக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்றனர். பெட்டிக்குள் தெனாலி ராமன் இருப்பதை அவர்கள் உணரவில்லை.
பெட்டியை மன்னர் அவிழ்த்து திறந்தபோது, அதிர்ச்சியடைந்தார். ‘இறந்த' தெனாலி ராமன் பெட்டியிலிருந்து உயிருடன் வெளியே வந்தார். ‘‘அரசே! என் மரணத்திற்குப் பிறகு நீங்கள் என்ன செய்வீர்கள் என்று தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பதற்காகத்தான் இதைச் செய்தேன். நான் இறந்த பிறகு தயவு செய்து என் குடும்பத்தைப் புறக்கணிக்காதீர்கள். செல்வத்தைப் பறிமுதல் செய்யும் பழைய விதியை மாற்ற வேண்டும்” என்றார் தெனாலி ராமன். ராமன் சொன்னதை மன்னன் உணர்ந்தார், விஜயநகர் சாம்ராஜ்யத்தின் விதியை மாற்றி அமைக்க ஒப்புதல் தெரிவித்தார். - கட்டுரையாளர்: ஆங்கிலத் துறை முன்னாள் உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்
