Once upon a time, a magician came to the palace of King Krishnadev Raya and started entertaining everyone by showing different types of magic. Everyone present in the court was delighted to see his magic.

The magician was very proud of his magic feat. After showing magic, he challenged the people sitting there whether anyone has the power to defeat him in magic? Everyone sitting there just kept looking at each other silently. No one came forward to accept that magician's challenge. Tenali Raman sitting in the court was also watching all these things. When no one came forward, Tenali Raman got up and accepted the magician's challenge.

Tenali Raman said to the magician, “Whatever I can do with closed eyes, can you do that with open eyes?” The proud magician laughed and said, “What is the big deal in this, I can certainly do it with open eyes.”

After listening to the magician, Tenali Raman went to the gatekeeper and said something in his ears. Hearing Tenali Raman's words, the gatekeeper went out and brought a tray covered with silk cloth. After removing the silk cloth Tenali Raman took handful of red chilli powder from the bowl kept in the tray. Then Tenali Raman closed his eyes and started pouring chilli powder on his eyes. Tenali Raman smiled softly while adding the chillies. Then after a while Tenali Raman washed his closed eyes and after opening his eyes, looking at the magician, said, “Now you have to do this with open eyes.”

The magician accepted his defeat and left from there bowing his head. Everyone sitting in the court including Maharaj became happy with Tenali Raman. The Maharaj was pleased and presented Tenali Raman with many gifts. Too much pride and the ego of a person always defeats him.

தெனாலி ராமனின் மந்திரவாதம்

ஒரு சமயம் மந்திரவாதி ஒருவர் மன்னர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயரின் அரண்மனைக்கு வந்து பல்வேறு வகையான மந்திரங்களைக் காட்டி அனைவரையும் மகிழ்விக்க ஆரம்பித்தார். அரசவையில் இருந்த அனைவரும் அவரது மாயாஜாலத்தை கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

மந்திரவாதி தனது மந்திர சக்தியை எண்ணி பெருமிதம் கொண்டார். மாயாஜால வித்தைகளை காட்டிவிட்டு, அங்கு அமர்ந்திருந்தவர்களிடம் தன்னை மாயமந்திரத்தில் தோற்கடிக்க யாருக்காவது திறமை இருக்கிறதா என்று சவால் விடுத்தார். அங்கு அமர்ந்திருந்த அனைவரும் அமைதியாக ஒருவரை ஒருவர் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். அந்த மந்திரவாதியின் சவாலை ஏற்க யாரும் முன்வரவில்லை. அரசவையில் அமர்ந்திருந்த தெனாலி ராமனும் இவற்றையெல்லாம் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். யாரும் முன்வராததால், தெனாலி ராமன் எழுந்து மந்திரவாதியின் சவாலை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார். மூடிய கண்களால் நான் செய்வதை திறந்த கண்களால் செய்ய முடியுமா என்று மந்திரவாதியிடம் தெனாலி ராமன் கேட்டார். கர்வம் பிடித்த மந்திரவாதி சிரித்துவிட்டு, இதென்ன பெரிய விஷயம், நான் அதை நிச்சயமாக திறந்த கண்களால் செய்ய முடியும் என்று பதிலளித்தார்.

மந்திரவாதியின் பேச்சைக் கேட்ட தெனாலி ராமன் வாயில்காவலரிடம் சென்று அவரது காதில் ஏதோ சொன்னான். தெனாலி ராமனின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்ட வாயில்காவலர் வெளியே சென்று பட்டு துணி போர்த்திய தாம்பாளத்தை கொண்டு வந்தான். அந்த பட்டு துணியை அகற்றி அதில் இருந்த கிண்ணத்தில் இருந்து கைநிறைய சிவப்பு மிளகாய்ப் பொடியைக் கையில் எடுத்துக் கொண்டார் தெனாலி ராமன். தனது கண்களை மூடிக் கொண்டு மிளகாய்ப் பொடியை கண்களின் மேல் கொட்ட ஆரம்பித்தார் தெனாலி ராமன். மிளகாய்த் தூளை கொட்டிக் கொண்டே மெல்லச் சிரித்தார் தெனாலி ராமன். பிறகு சிறிது நேரத்தில் தெனாலி ராமன் மூடிய கண்களைக் கழுவிவிட்டு, கண்களைத் திறந்தார். அடுத்து மந்திரவாதியைப் பார்த்து, இனி திறந்த கண்களால் நீங்கள் இதைச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றார் தெனாலி ராமன். தான் தோல்வி அடைந்ததாக மந்திரவாதி ஒப்புக்கொண்டு குனிந்த தலையுடன் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேறினார். மகாராஜா உட்பட அரசவையில் அமர்ந்திருந்த அனைவரும் தெனாலி ராமனால் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தனர். மகாராஜா மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்து தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு பல பரிசுகளை வழங்கினார். அளவுக்கு அதிகமான தற்பெருமையும் ஆணவமும் ஒருவரை எப்போதுமே தோற்கடித்துவிடும். - கட்டுரையாளர்: ஆங்கிலத் துறை முன்னாள் உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்
