Once King Krishnadeva Raya was discussing with his courtiers. While discussing, suddenly the talk started centering on cleverness. In the court of Maharaja Krishnadeva Raya, from Rajguru to many other courtiers greatly envied Tenali Raman. In such a situation, to humiliate Tenali Raman, a minister said in the court that, "Your Majesty! There are more than one intelligent and clever people present in the court and if given a chance, we all can present our cleverness to you, but?"

Maharaj Krishnadev asked in amazement, "But what minister?" On this the commander said, "Your Majesty! Let me tell you what is in the mind of the minister. Actually, in this court no one is given a chance to prove his cleverness except Tenali Raman. Each time Tenali Raman takes the credit for cleverness, so how can the rest of the court show their ability?”

Maharaj Krishnadeva Raya understood after listening to the commander that all the people of the court had come down against Tenali Raman. After this Maharaj remained calm for some time and started thinking in his mind. Then Maharaj's eyes went to the incense stick burning in front of the idol of God. Seeing the incense stick, the idea of testing all the courtiers came in the mind of Maharaj.

He immediately said, “All of you courtiers will definitely be given a chance to prove your mettle. Till all the courtiers prove their mettle, Tanali Raman will not intervene.” Hearing this, the people present in the court became happy. One of the courtiers said, "Okay sir! You tell us what we have to do?" King Krishnadeva Raya pointed towards the incense stick and said that bring two hands full of smoke for me. Whoever can do this work will be considered wiser than Tenali Raman."

After listening to the Maharaj, all the courtiers got into thinking and started discussing among themselves how it is possible, can the smoke be measured?

தெனாலி ராமன் மட்டும்தான் அறிவாளியா என்ன?

ஒருமுறை அரசர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் தனது அரசவையினருடன் கலந்துரையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்த போது, திடீரென்று சாமர்த்தியம் பற்றிய பேச்சு எழுந்தது. மகாராஜா கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயரின் அவையில், ராஜகுரு முதல் பல அரசவையினர்வரை தெனாலி ராமன் மீது ஒருவிதமான பொறாமை கொண்டிருந்தனர். இப்படிப்பட்ட நிலையில், தெனாலி ராமனை அவமானப்படுத்த, அரசவை அமைச்சர் ஒருவர், அரசே! அரசவையில் ஒன்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட புத்திசாலிகள் உள்ளனர். வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால், நாங்கள் அனைவரும் எங்கள் புத்திசாலித்தனத்தை உங்களிடம் நிரூபிப்போம். ஆனால்... என்று இழுத்தார்.

மகாராஜா கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் ஆச்சரியத்துடன், ஆனால் என்ன மந்திரி என்று கேட்டார். அதற்குத் தளபதி, அரசே! மந்திரி மனதில் என்ன இருக்கிறது என்று நான் சொல்றேன். உண்மையில், இந்த அரசவையில் தெனாலி ராமனைத் தவிர வேறு யாருக்கும் அவரது புத்திசாலித்தனத்தை நிரூபிக்க வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்படவில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் தெனாலி ராமன் புத்திசாலித்தனத்துக்கான பாராட்டை தட்டிப் பறித்து விடுகிறார். அப்படி நடந்தால் மற்ற அரசவையினர் தங்கள் ஆற்றலை எவ்வாறு வெளிக்காட்ட முடியும் என்று கேள்வி எழுப்பினார்.

அரசவை மக்கள் அனைவரும் தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு எதிராக களமிறங்கியுள்ளனர் என்பதை தளபதியின் பேச்சைக் கேட்டு மகாராஜா கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் புரிந்து கொண்டார். இதற்குப் பிறகு மகராஜா சிறிது நேரம் அமைதி காத்து மனத்துக்குள் சிந்திக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அப்போது மகாராஜாவின் கண்கள் கடவுள் சிலையின் முன் எரியும் ஊதுபத்தியை நோக்கி சென்றது. ஊதுபத்தியை பார்த்ததும், மகாராஜாவின் மனதில் அனைத்து அரசவையினரையும் சோதித்துப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றியது.

உடனே அவர், உங்கள் திறமையை நிரூபிக்க அனைவருக்கும் நிச்சயம் வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்படும். அரசவை உறுப்பினர்கள் அனைவரும் தங்களது திறமையை நிரூபிக்கும்வரை, தெனாலி ராமன் தலையிட மாட்டார் என்றார். இதைக் கேட்டதும் அரசவையில் கூடியிருந்தவர்கள் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். சரி ஐயா! நாங்கள் என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்லுங்கள் என்று அரசவையினரில் ஒருவர் கேட்டார். மன்னன் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் ஊதுபத்தியை காட்டி, எனக்கு இரண்டு கைப்பிடி புகையைக் கொண்டு வந்து தர வேண்டும் என்றார். இந்தப் பணியைச் செய்யக் கூடியவர் தெனாலி ராமனைக் காட்டிலும் புத்திசாலியாகக் கருதப்படுவார்.

மகாராஜாவின் பேச்சைக் கேட்டு, அரசவையினர் அனைவரும் ஆழ்ந்த சிந்தனைக்குள் சென்றனர். அது எப்படி சாத்தியம் என்று தங்களுக்குள் விவாதித்தனர், புகையை அளவிட முடியுமா?
