Tenali Becomes A Hermit
One day the desire to build a bigger pagoda (a tall tower with several levels, each of which has its own roof), arose in the mind of King Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagara kingdom. With this thought, he called his special ministers and asked them to find a good place for the pagoda. Within a few days, a good place was chosen by everyone for the pagoda. The king also liked that place and gave permission to start work there.
The king handed over the entire responsibility of building the temple to a minister. He took some people with him and started cleaning the place. Then during excavation, a gold idol of Shankar Dev was found. Seeing the gold idol, the minister got greedy and asked the workers to keep that idol in his house.
Some of the workers were close to Tenali Raman. They told Tenali Raman about the gold idol and the minister's greed. Even after coming to know about all these things, Tenali Raman did nothing. He kept waiting for the right time.
After a few days, the auspicious time for performing Bhoomi Puja was taken out at the place earmarked for the temple. After everything went on well, the king started talking to his ministers in the court to get an idol sculpted for the temple. He sought the opinion of all his ministers about it. Even after talking to everyone, the king could not take any decision regarding the idol.
The next day the king again called all his ministers to discuss about the idol in the court. Then a Jatathari (long grown hair) saint came to the court. Seeing the saint, everyone asked him to sit respectfully. Sitting on a pedestal, the Jatathari sanyasi told the king that, “Mahadev himself has sent me here. I know that you guys are thinking of building a Shiva temple and what should be the idol to be installed there is being discussed here. That's why I have come here”. Jatadhari Sanyasi further said that, “Lord Shiva himself has sent me here to remove your problems.” King Krishnadev asked in surprise, “Lord Shiva himself has sent you?”

தெனாலி ராமன் சன்னியாசி ஆனார்
விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்யத்தின் மன்னர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயரின் மனதில் பெரிய பகோடா (பல அடுக்கு கொண்ட கோபுரம். ஒவ்வொரு அடுக்கிற்கும் தனி கூரை வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்) கட்ட வேண்டும் என்ற ஆசை ஒரு நாள் எழுந்தது. இந்த எண்ணத்துடன், அவர் தனது சிறப்பு அமைச்சர்களை அழைத்து, பகோடாவுக்கு ஒரு நல்ல இடத்தைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கச் சொன்னார். சில நாட்களில் பகோடா கட்ட தோதான நல்ல இடம் எல்லோராலும் சேர்ந்து தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டது. மன்னருக்கும் அந்த இடம் பிடித்திருந்ததால் அங்கு கட்டுமான பணியை தொடங்க அனுமதி அளித்தார்.
கோயில் கட்டியெழுப்பும் முழு பொறுப்பையும் மன்னர் ஒரு அமைச்சரிடம் ஒப்படைத்தார். சிலரை தன்னுடன் அழைத்துச் சென்று அந்த இடத்தைச் சுத்தம் செய்ய பணித்தார். அப்போது அங்கு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட அகழ்வாராய்ச்சியில் சங்கர் தேவ் தங்க சிலை கண்டெடுக்கப்பட்டது. தங்கச் சிலையைக் கண்டு பேராசை கொண்ட அமைச்சர், அந்தச் சிலையை தன் வீட்டில் வைக்கும்படி பணியாளர்களிடம் கேட்டுக் கொண்டார்.
பணியாளர்களில் சிலர் தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு இணக்கமானவர்களாக இருந்தனர். பொன் சிலை பற்றியும் அமைச்சரின் பேராசை பற்றியும் அவர்கள் தெனாலி ராமனிடம் புகார் அளித்தனர். நடந்த விஷயங்கள் அத்தனையும் தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு தெரிந்த பிறகும் அவர் எதுவும் செய்யவில்லை. சரியான நேரத்துக்காக காத்திருந்தார்.
சில நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு, கோயிலுக்கு ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட இடத்தில் பூமி பூஜை செய்வதற்கான மங்கள நேரம் குறிக்கப்பட்டது. எல்லாம் நல்லபடியாக நடந்து முடிந்த பிறகு, தன் அமைச்சர்களிடம் கோவிலுக்குச் சிலை செதுக்குவது பற்றி அரசர் பேசத் தொடங்கினார். இதுபற்றி தனது அமைச்சர்கள் அனைவரிடமும் கருத்து கேட்டார். எல்லோரிடமும் பேசிப் பார்த்தாலும் சிலை சம்பந்தமாக அரசரால் எந்த முடிவும் எடுக்க முடியவில்லை.
மறுநாள் அரசர் மீண்டும் தன் அமைச்சர்கள் அனைவரையும் அழைத்து, சிலையைப் பற்றி அரசவையில் விவாதித்தார். அப்போது ஒரு ஜடாமுடி சன்னியாசி அரசவைக்கு வந்தார். சந்நியாசியைப் பார்த்ததும் அனைவரும் மரியாதையுடன் அமரச் சொன்னார்கள். ஒரு பீடத்தில் அமர்ந்திருந்த ஜடாமுடி சன்யாசி மன்னரிடம், “மகாதேவாதான் என்னை இங்கு அனுப்பினார். நீங்கள் சிவன் கோவில் கட்ட நினைப்பதையும், அங்கு நிறுவப்படும் சிலை என்னவாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பது குறித்தும் இங்கு விவாதிக்கப்படுவதை நான் அறிவேன். அதனால்தான் இங்க வந்திருக்கேன்” என்றார்.
ஜடாமுடி சன்யாசி மேலும் கூறுகையில், “உங்கள் பிரச்சினைகளை நீக்க சிவபெருமான் என்னை இங்கு அனுப்பியுள்ளார்” என்றார். இதை கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்த மன்னர் கிருஷ்ணதேவராயர், "சிவபெருமானே உங்களை அனுப்பினாரா?" என்று ஆச்சரியத்துடன் கூறினார்.
