THE REWARD AND THE PUNISHMENT
The news that the guards in the king’s palace were resorting to bribery troubled Tenali Raman. He wanted to bring it to the king’s notice but could not tell him directly as the king trusted his guards. So, he kept waiting for a golden opportunity to expose the guard.
One day, a special dance troupe came to entertain the king. He was seated in his private chambers and ordered his guards that no one should disturb him. Tenali Ramakrishna heard about this and got an idea. He tried to rush into the king’s private chambers.
The guard stopped him saying, “You cannot go in pundit Rama. The king has ordered that no one should disturb him.” Raman then replied, “The king has promised me a hefty reward. If you let me in, I will give you half of the reward.” The corrupt guard agreed to this andlet Raman in. A guard at the entranceof the hall also fell into Raman’s trap.
Upon entering the king’s chamber, Raman took out a stick and started to beat the dancers. The king was startled and asked Raman for explanation for his irrational behavior.
Raman deliberately kept quiet. This made the king furious, and he ordered fifty whiplashes as a punishment. Just when the punishment was about to begin, Raman stopped the guard and said, ‘‘Majesty, I have two of my friends who are willing to share the lashes along with me.”
The king was surprised and wanted to know who these fools were. He ordered the guards to fetch the two men.
As soon as the guards appeared with the two men, the king asked them if they agreed to share the rewards Tenali Raman would be receiving.
Unaware of what the reward was, both the guards said, “Yes, your majesty.” Then the king asked Raman why he had made such a promise. Raman replied, “Your majesty, I made them this offer to let me in. Despite your orders to not be disturbed, they agreed.”
The king understood that his guards had taken a bribe and punished them. He then thanked Tenali Raman for bringing out the rampant corruption to light.
வெகுமதியும் தண்டனையும்
அரசரின் அரண்மனையில் காவலர்கள் லஞ்சம் வாங்குகிறார்கள் என்ற செய்தி தெனாலி ராமனை கலங்கச் செய்தது. அவர் அதை மன்னரின் கவனத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவர விரும்பினார், ஆனால், மன்னர் தனது காவலர்களை நம்பியதால் அவரிடம் நேரடியாகச் சொல்ல முடியவில்லை. எனவே, காவலர்களை அம்பலப்படுத்த ஒரு பொன்னான வாய்ப்புக்காகக் ராமன் காத்திருந்தார்.
ஒரு நாள், அரசரை மகிழ்விக்க ஒரு சிறப்பு நடனக் குழு வந்தது. அவர் தனது தனிப்பட்ட அறையில் அமர்ந்து, யாரும் தன்னை தொந்தரவு செய்ய வேண்டாம் என்று காவலர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார். இதைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு ஒரு யோசனை வந்தது. அவர் மன்னரின் தனி அறைக்குள் விரைந்து செல்ல முயன்றார்.
காவலாளி தடுத்து, “பண்டிதர் ராமனே நீங்கள் உள்ளே செல்ல முடியாது. யாரும் இடையூறு செய்ய வேண்டாம் என்று அரசர் கட்டளையிட்டுள்ளார்" என்றார்.
அதற்கு ராமன், “அரசர் எனக்கு ஒரு பெரிய வெகுமதியை தருவதாக வாக்களித்துள்ளார். நீங்கள் என்னை உள்ளே அனுமதித்தால், வெகுமதியில் பாதியை உங்களுக்குத் தந்துவிடுகிறேன்" என்றார்.
ஊழல் காவலர் இதற்கு சம்மதித்து ராமரை உள்ளே அனுமதித்தார். மண்டப வாசலில் இருந்த காவலரும் ராமனின் வலையில் விழுந்தார்.
ராஜாவின் அறைக்குள் நுழைந்த ராமன் ஒரு குச்சியை எடுத்து நடனக் கலைஞர்களை அடிக்கத் தொடங்கினார். மன்னர் திடுக்கிட்டு, ராமனிடம் தன் பகுத்தறிவற்ற நடத்தைக்கு விளக்கம் கேட்டார்.
ராமன் வேண்டுமென்றே அமைதி காத்தார். இதனால் கோபமடைந்த ராஜா, தண்டனையாக ஐம்பது சவுக்கடிகளை கட்டளையிட்டார். தண்டனை தொடங்கும் நேரத்தில், ராமன் காவலரை நிறுத்தி, “அரசே, என்னுடன் சவுக்கடிகளை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள இரண்டு நண்பர்கள் உள்ளனர்” என்றார்.
அரசர் ஆச்சரியமடைந்து, அந்த முட்டாள்கள் யார் என்பதை அறிய விரும்பினார். இருவரையும் அழைத்து வரும்படி காவலர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார்.
காவலர்கள் இருவருடனும் தோன்றியவுடன், தெனாலி ராமன் பெறும் வெகுமதியைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள ஒப்புக்கொள்கிறீர்களா என்று மன்னர் அவர்களிடம் கேட்டார். என்ன வெகுமதி என்பதை அறியாத காவலர்கள் இருவரும், “ஆம், மாட்சிமையே ” என்றனர். அப்போது அரசர் ராமனிடம் ஏன் இப்படி வாக்குறுதி அளித்தாய் என்று கேட்டார்.
அதற்கு ராமன், "அரசே, என்னை உள்ளே அனுமதிக்கவே நான் அவர்களுக்கு இந்த வாய்ப்பை வழங்கினேன். தொந்தரவு செய்ய வேண்டாம் என்று நீங்கள் உத்தரவிட்ட போதிலும், அவர்கள் ஒப்புக்கொண்டனர் ."
தனது காவலர்கள் லஞ்சம் வாங்கியதை புரிந்து கொண்டு அவர்களை அரசர் தண்டித்தார். மலிந்து கிடக்கும் ஊழலை வெளிக்கொண்டு வந்த தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்தார்.
