WHO IS THE GREAT SCHOLAR?
One day, a proud stranger who branded himself as a great scholar came to Vijayanagar and requested for an audience in the court of Krishnadev raya. Using his intelligence and classic witty ways, he humbled the arrogant scholars. He challenged Krishnadev raya for a battle of wits with his esteemed eight poets. All the poets were getting defeated one after the other, and the scholar really seemed to know every subject.
At last, it was Tenali Raman’s turn. He took out a book covered in yellow silk cloth and said, “Oh, great scholar! Let us have a debate on any topic you choose from this great piece of literature called Thilaka Mahista Bandhanam.”
The pundit was startled; he has read thousands of books in several languages but never heard about this book. He became very puzzled. Fearing his defeat, he announced that he was ill and would continue the debate later. He bowed his head in shame in and left the court.
Krishnadev raya was joyous because Tenali Rama had saved the reputation of his court. At the same time, he was curious about that piece of literature. After facilitating and rewarding Tenali Raman, the king asked him what Thilaka Mahista Bandhanam was.
Rama laughed and removed the silk cloth. To everyone’s surprise, it was not a book, but a bundle of twigs tied with a rope to appear like a book. Rama then said, “Oh great king, ‘til’ means mustard; ‘kastha’ is stick, and ‘tilakastha’ means ‘sticks of mustard plants; this rope is used to tie oxen, which makes it ‘mahisha bandhana’ as ‘mahisha’ means ox and ‘bandhana’ means to bind. I just used the Sanskrit names of all these things, and the pandit got scared thinking that this was some unknown piece of literature.”
The whole court burst out laughing, and Krishnadev raya praised Tenali Raman for his wit and humor.
யார் பேரறிஞர்?
தன்னைப் பேரறிஞர் என்று தம்பட்டம் அடித்துக் கொண்டு பெருமிதத்துடன் ஒரு அந்நியர் விஜயநகரத்திற்கு வந்து கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயரின் அவையில் அவரது சந்திப்பை கோரினார். தனது புத்திசாலித்தனத்தாலும் அட்டகாசமான கேலிக் கிண்டலாலும் திமிர்பிடித்த அறிஞர்களை அந்த நபர் தலைகுனியச் செய்தார்.
கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயரின் அரசவையில் உள்ள பெருமதிப்பிற்குரிய 8 புலவர்களுடன் மோத தான் தயார் என்று சவால் விடுத்தார். எல்லாப் புலவர்களும் ஒருவர் பின் ஒருவராக தோற்கடிக்கப்பட்டனர். அந்த பேரறிஞர் அனைத்து விஷயங்களையும் அறிந்தவராக இருந்தார்.
கடைசியில் தெனாலி ராமனின் முறை வந்தது. மஞ்சள் பட்டுத் துணியால் மூடப்பட்டிருந்த ஒரு புத்தகத்தை எடுத்து,“அட பேரறிஞரே! திலக மஹிஸ்தா பந்தனம் என்ற இந்த மாபெரும் இலக்கியத்திலிருந்து நீங்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கும் எந்த தலைப்பிலும் நாம் விவாதம் நடத்தலாம்" என்றார் தெனாலி ராமன்.
பண்டிதர் திடுக்கிட்டார். அவர் பல மொழிகளில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான புத்தகங்களைப் படித்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால், இந்தப் புத்தகத்தைப் பற்றி கேள்விப்பட்டதே இல்லை.தோல்விபயத்தில், தனக்கு உடல்நிலை சரியில்லை, பின்னர் விவாதத்தை தொடரலாம் என அறிவித்தார். அவமானத்தால் தலைகுனிந்தபடி நீதிமன்றத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறினார்.
தெனாலி ராமன் தனது அரசவையின் நற்பெயரைக் காப்பாற்றியதால் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தார். அதே நேரத்தில், அவர் அந்த இலக்கியத்தின் மீது ஆர்வமாக இருந்தார். தெனாலி ராமனுக்கு சகல வசதிகள் செய்து கொடுத்து வெகுமதி அளித்த பிறகு, திலக மகிஸ்தா பந்தனம் என்றால் என்ன என்று மன்னர் கேட்டார்.
தெனாலி ராமன் சிரித்துக் கொண்டே பட்டுத் துணியை அவிழ்த்தார். எல்லோரும் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தனர், அது புத்தகம் அல்ல, புத்தகம் போல் தோன்றும் வகையில் கயிற்றால் கட்டப்பட்ட மரக்கிளைகள்.
அப்போது தெனாலி ராமன், “அரசே, ‘தில்' என்றால் கடுகு; ‘கஸ்தா' என்பது குச்சி, மற்றும் ‘திலகஸ்தா' என்றால் கடுகு செடிகளின் குச்சிகள். இந்தக் கயிறு மாடுகளைக் கட்டப் பயன்படுகிறது. எருது என பொருள் கொண்ட ‘மஹிஷா', கட்டுதலை சுட்டிக்காட்டும் ‘பந்தனம்' அதாவது ‘மஹிஷா பந்தனா' ஆகிறது. நான் இந்த பொருட்களின் சமஸ்கிருத பெயர்களைப் பயன்படுத்தினேன். இது ஏதோ தெரியாதஇலக்கியம் என்று நினைத்து பண்டிதர் பயந்துவிட்டார்’’ என்றார். முழு அரசவையும் வெடித்துச் சிரித்தது, தெனாலி ராமனின் புத்திசாலித்தனம் மற்றும் நகைச்சுவையை கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் பாராட்டினார்.
