Many scholars and intellectuals from far off places were welcome at King Krishnadev Raya's Vijaynagar palace. He enjoyed their company and treated them with honour and dignity.

Once a man of high intellect visited Royal court of Vijayanagar. King Krishnadev Raya was very much impressed with the intelligent man. Though he was wellverse in Tulu language the king was not sure of the visitor’s mother tongue.

Sometime later, Krishnadev Raya inquired the visitor about his mother tongue. The visitor thought of being a bit mischievous so instead of directly answering the question, the visitor threw a challenge.

The visitor challenged Kirshnadev Raya to find out his mother tongue. All the courtiers tried their best to find out the visitor’s mother tongue. When everyone failed, Krishnadev Raya entrusted this duty to Tenali Raman. Tenali Raman claimed to reveal about the visitor’s mother tongue next morning. Everyone retired to their places.

At night, the visitor was accidentally served too much spicy meal on the dinner table. The visitor started shouting for water. Royal chef prepared new meal for visitor and asked for forgiveness.

Next morning Tenali Raman revealed that the visitor is a Tamilian. Tenali Raman continued, “I beg your pardon gentleman, but it was me only who deliberately asked the royal chef to serve you intensely spicy food.

When you were shouting for water, you also cried “Amma” which is a Tamil word for mother. And when in pain, a person always calls his mother and that too in his mother tongue. Hence I can confidently say that you are a Tamilian.” Once again everyone was amazed with Tenali Raman’s wit.

மன்னர் கிருஷ்ண தேவராயரின் விஜயநகர அரண்மனைக்கு வெகு தொலைவில் இருந்து பல அறிஞர்களும் அறிவுஜீவிகளும் வரவேற்கப்பட்டனர். அவர்களுடன் நேரம் செலவிடுவதை மன்னர் மகிழ்ச்சியாக அனுபவித்தார். மேலும் அவர்களை மரியாதையுடனும் கண்ணியத்துடனும் நடத்தினார்.

ஒரு சமயம், அறிவுஜீவி ஒருவர் விஜயநகரின் அரசவைக்கு வந்தார். அரசர் கிருஷ்ணதேவராயர் அந்த அறிவார்ந்த மனிதரால் மிகவும் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டார். அவர் துளு மொழியில் சரளமாகப் பேசினாலும் அவரது தாய்மொழி என்னவாக இருக்கும் என்கிற சந்தேகம் மன்னருக்கு எழுந்தது.

சிறிது நேரம் கழித்து, கிருஷ்ண தேவராயர் வந்தவரிடம் அவரது தாய்மொழி பற்றி விசாரித்தார். வந்தவர் சற்று குறும்புத்தனத்தை காட்ட நினைத்ததால் நேரடியாக கேள்விக்கு பதில் சொல்லாமல் தனது தாய்மொழியை கண்டுபிடிக்கும்படி சவால் விடுத்தார்.

விருந்தினரின் தாய்மொழியை கண்டுபிடிக்க விஜயநகர அரசவையின் அத்தனை உறுப்பினர்களும் தங்களால் இயன்றவரை முயன்றனர். எல்லோரும் தோல்வியுற்றபோது, கிருஷ்ணதேவராயர் தெனாலி ராமனிடம் இந்தக் பொறுப்பை ஒப்படைத்தார்.

தெனாலி ராமன் அடுத்த நாள் காலை பார்வையாளரின் தாய்மொழி என்ன என்று சொல்வதாக கூறினார். அனைவரும் ஓய்வெடுக்க தங்களது இருப்பிடத்துக்குச் சென்றனர்.

இரவில், விருந்தாளிக்குத் தற்செயலாக அதிக காரமான உணவு பரிமாறப்பட்டது. வந்தவர் தண்ணீருக்காக கத்த ஆரம்பித்தார். அரச சமையல்காரர் விருந்தாளிக்கு புதிய உணவை தயாரித்து அளித்து மன்னிப்பு கேட்டார். அடுத்த நாள் காலை தெனாலி ராமன் விருந்தாளி தமிழர் என்று எல்லோருக்கும் தெரியப்படுத்தினார்.

தெனாலி ராமன் தொடர்ந்தார், “உங்களிடம் மன்னிப்புக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன் நான்தான் அரச சமையல்காரரிடம் அதீத காரமான உணவை உங்களுக்கு பரிமாறும்படி சொன்னேன்.

நீங்கள் தண்ணீருக்காகக் குரல் கொடுத்த போது, தமிழ்ச் சொல்லான “அம்மா” என்ற சொல்லைக் கூறி கத்தினீர்கள். எந்த மனிதரும் வலியில் துடிக்கும்போது தனது தாயைதான் அழைப்பார். அதுவும் தனது தாய்மொழியில். எனவே நீங்கள் ஒரு தமிழர் என்று என்னால் உறுதியாகச் சொல்ல முடியும்" என்றார். தெனாலி ராமனின் புத்திசாலித்தனத்தை கண்டு மீண்டும் அனைவரும் வியந்தனர்.
