WHO IS THE CURSED
In the Kingdom of Vijayanagara, there lived a man named Somaya. He had few enemies who had deliberately spread a dirty rumour about him. The rumour was that if one saw Somaya first in the morning, they would be cursed and not be able to eat the whole day. Hearing this, the King wanted to test it out for himself.
The guards made the arrangements for Somaya and set up a room right next to the King for him. The next morning, the King walked to Somaya’s room, so he could look at him first thing and test this rumour out.
It just so happened that at lunchtime, the King spotted a fly in his meal and asked the cook to take it away and prepare a new lunch. By the time lunch was served again, the King had lost his appetite and realised that this rumour was indeed true – seeing Somaya’s face first thing in the morning did cause people to be cursed. He didn’t wish this for his people and demanded that Somaya be hanged.
Distraught, Somaya’s wife goes to Tenali Raman for help as she doesn’t want to lose her husband. Hearing the whole story, Tenali Raman goes to Somaya and whispers something into his ears, right before he is to be taken to be hanged.
On the same day, the guards ask Somaya if he has any last wish. Somaya says he wants to give the King a note that he must read before the hanging. The guards deliver this note to the King. In the note were the words Tenali Raman had whispered – ‘If seeing Somaya’s face, one loses their appetite; then a person who sees the King’s face, first thing in the morning, is destined to lose his life. Who is, therefore, more cursed – Somaya or the King?’
Reading this, the King understood his mistake and set Somaya free!
யார் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர்?
விஜயநகர சாம்ராஜ்ஜியத்தில் சோமையா என்பவர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவருக்கு சில எதிரிகள் இருந்ததால் அவரைப் பற்றி ஒரு மோசமான வதந்தியை வேண்டுமென்றே பரப்பினர். காலையில் முதன்முதலில் சோமையா முகத்தில் விழித்தால் சாபம் ஏற்பட்டு அந்த நாள் முழுவதும் சாப்பிட முடியாது என்பதே அந்த வதந்தி. இதைக் கேட்ட மன்னர் தானே அதை சோதித்து பார்க்க விரும்பினார்.
காவலர்கள் மன்னருக்குப் பக்கத்தில் ஒரு அறையை சோமையாவுக்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்தனர். மறுநாள் காலை, சோமையாவின் அறையை நோக்கி மன்னர் நடந்தார். இதன் மூலம் சோமையா முகத்தில் விழித்து வதந்தியை சோதித்து பார்த்துவிட எண்ணினார்.
மதிய உணவு நேரத்தில், மன்னர் தனது உணவில் ஒரு ஈ கிடப்பதை கண்டார். அதனால் அந்த உணவை திருப்பி எடுத்து சென்றுவிட்டு புதிய மதிய உணவைத் தயாரிக்குமாறு சமையல்காரருக்கு கட்டளையிட்டார். மீண்டும் மதிய உணவு பரிமாறப்பட்டபோது, மன்னருக்கு பசியே மறந்துபோனது.
இதன் மூலம் இந்த வதந்தி உண்மை என்பதை உணர்ந்தார். காலையில் சோமையாவின் முகத்தை முதலில் பார்த்த மக்களுக்கு சாபம் ஏற்படுகிறது என்றும் தன் மக்களுக்கு இவ்வாறு ஏற்படுவதை தான் விரும்பாததால் சோமையாவை தூக்கிலிட வேண்டும் என்றும் முடிவெடுத்தார்.
மனம் உடைந்த சோமையாவின் மனைவி, கணவனை இழந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்பதால் தெனாலி ராமனிடம் உதவி கோரினார். முழு கதையையும் கேட்ட தெனாலி ராமன், சோமையாவிடம் சென்று, தூக்கிலிடப்படுவதற்கு முன்பாக, அவரது காதில் ஏதோ கிசுகிசுத்தார்.
அதே நாளில், காவலர்கள் சோமையாவுக்கு ஏதேனும் கடைசி ஆசை இருக்கிறதா என்று கேட்கிறார்கள். தான் தூக்கிலிடப்படுவதற்கு முன்னால் மன்னர் வாசிக்க வேண்டிய குறிப்பை மன்னரிடம் கொடுக்க விரும்புவதாக சோமையா தெரிவித்தார். காவலர்கள் இந்தக் குறிப்பை அரசரிடம் ஒப்படைத்தனர்.
அதில் தெனாலி ராமன் கிசுகிசுத்துச் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகள் இடம்பெற்றிருந்தன – ‘‘சோமையாவின் முகத்தில் விழிப்பவருக்குத் தனது பசி போய்விடும் என்றால், காலையில் முதன்முதலில் மன்னரின் முகத்தில் எவரொருவர் விழிக்க நேரிடுகிறதோ அவர் தனது உயிரையே இழக்க நேரிடும். எனவே, அதிகம் சபிக்கப்பட்டவர் யார் - சோமையாவா அல்லது மன்னரா?''
இதைப் படித்த மன்னர் தன் தவறை உணர்ந்து சோமையாவை விடுவித்தார்.
