He noticed a small clump of grass. He thought, “Without water, no plant could live in this desert.” So he called over some of his fellow travellers and asked them to dig up

the ground on that very spot. They dug and dug, and after a while they got down to a large stone.

Seeing it they stopped, and began to blame the leader again, saying “This effort is useless. We’re just wasting our time!” But the tradesman replied, “No no, my friends, if we give up the effort we will all be ruined and our poor animals will die –

let us be encouraged!”

As he said this, he got down into the hole, put his ear to the stone, and heard the sound of flowing water. Immediately, he called over a boy who had been digging and said, “Take this heavy hammer and strike the rock.” The boy lifted the hammer over his head and hit the rock as hard as he could. The rock spilt in two and a mighty flow of water gushed out from under it! Suddenly, all the people were overjoyed.

They drank and bathed and washed the animals and cooked their food and ate.

Before they left, they raised a high banner so that other travellers could see it from afar and come to the new spring in the middle of the hot sand desert. Then they continued on safely to the end of their journey.

The moral is: Don’t give up too easily – keep on trying until you reach the goal.

புதிய ஊற்று

(நேற்றைய கதையின் தொடர்ச்சி)

அந்த வணிகன் அந்த பாலைவனத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியில் ஒரு கொத்துப் புற்களை கவனித்தான். அவன் இப்படி யோசித்தான். ' தண்ணீர் இல்லாமல் எந்தத் தாவரமும் இந்தப் பாலைவனத்தில் வளர முடியாது'.

எனவே அவன் சில சக பயணிகளை அழைத்து புற்கள் காணப்பட்ட அதே பகுதி நிலத்தைத் தோண்டச் செய்தான். அவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து தோண்டினார்கள். அங்கு பாறை போன்ற ஒரு பெரிய கல்தான் தென்பட்டது. அதைக்கண்டதும் அவர்கள் தோண்டுவதை நிறுத்தினார்கள். வணிகனை நோக்கி 'இந்த முயற்சி வீணானது. நாம் நேரத்தை வீணடித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்' என்று குற்றம் சுமத்தினார்கள்.

ஆனால் வணிகன் 'இல்லவே இல்லை நண்பர்களே. இப்போது நம் முயற்சிகளைக் கை விட்டால் நாம் அனைவருமே அழிந்து விடுவோம். இந்த பாவப்பட்ட விலங்குகளும் இறந்துவிடும். நாம் துணிவைக் கைக்கொள்வோம்' என்றான்.

இப்படி கூறியபடியே தோண்டப்பட்ட பள்ளத்துக்குள் இறங்கி அந்தக் கல்லின் மீது தன் காதை வைத்து பார்த்தான். தண்ணீர் ஓடும் ஒலியை அவனால் கேட்க முடிந்தது. உடனே அவன் தோண்டிக் கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு சிறுவனை நோக்கி 'இந்த கனமான சம்மட்டியை எடுத்து அந்தப் பாறையை உடை' என்றான்.

அந்த சிறுவனும் அந்த சம்மட்டியைத் தன் தலைக்கு மேலே தூக்கி தன்னால் முடிந்தவரை பலமாக அந்த பாறையை உடைத்தான். பாறை இரண்டாக பிளந்தது. அதன் கீழிருந்து தண்ணீர் பீறிட்டு மேலெழும்பியது. உடனடியாகப் பயணிகள் பெரு மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தனர். அந்தத் தண்ணீரை குடித்தனர். அதில் குளித்தனர். விலங்குகளை குளிப்பாட்டினர். அதை கொண்டு உணவு சமைத்து உண்டனர்.

அங்கிருந்து கிளம்புவதற்கு முன், வருங்காலத்தில் அந்தப் பாலைவனத்தில் பயணிப்பவர்கள் தொலை தூரத்திலிருந்தே காணும் வகையில் ஒரு உயர்ந்த பதாகையை அங்கே அமைத்தனர். இதன்மூலம் அந்த கடும் வெப்ப பாலைவனத்தில் வருபவர்கள் அந்தப் புதிய ஊற்றைக் கண்டறிய முடியும். பின்னர் அவர்கள் பாதுகாப்பான முறையில் தங்கள் பயணத்தை முடித்தார்கள்.

கதையின் நீதி - சுலபத்தில் மனம் தளர வேண்டாம். குறிக்கோளை அடையும்வரை முயற்சி செய்து கொண்டே இருங்கள்.
