NEW FOUNTAIN
Once upon a time a tradesman was leading a caravan to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came across a desert. They found that during the day time the sun heats up the fine sand so much that no one can walk on it – not even bullocks and camels!
So the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cools down. A couple nights later, after eating their evening meal, and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again. The desert guide, had overeaten; he dozed off to sleep. Then the bullocks who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place they had started from!
By then it was morning, and the people realized they were back at the same spot they’d camped at the day before. They began to cry about their condition. They had no more water and were afraid they would die of thirst.
Then the tradesman thought to himself, “If I lose courage now, in the middle of this disastrous situation, my leadership has no meaning. If I fall to weeping and regretting this misfortune, and do nothing, all these goods and bullocks and even the lives of the people, including myself, may be lost.
I must be energetic and face the situation!” So he began trying to think out a plan to save them all. (To be continued)

ஒருகாலத்தில் ஒரு வணிகன் தன் பொருள்களை விற்பதற்காக வேறு நாட்டுக்கு தன் குழுவினருடன் கிளம்பினான். போகும் வழியில் அவர்கள் ஒரு பாலைவனத்தைக் கடக்க நேரிட்டது.
பகலில் சூரியன் அந்தப் பாலைவனத்தின் நுண்மணல்களை மிகவும் வெப்பப்படுத்தி யாருமே அதில் நடக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு செய்கிறது (எருதுகளும் ஒட்டகங்களும் கூட!) என்பதை அவர்கள் கண்டறிந்தனர்.
எனவே அந்தப் பயணக் கூட்டத்தின் தலைவர் ஒரு பாலைவன வழிகாட்டியை நியமித்துக்கொண்டார். அந்த வழிகாட்டியால் நட்சத்திரங்களைக் கொண்டு திசையைக் கணிக்க முடிந்ததால் மணல்கள் குளிர்ச்சியடையும் இரவு நேரங்களில் மட்டுமே பயணம் செய்யும் வகையில் வழிகாட்ட முடிந்தது.
இரு நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு இரவு உணவை உண்ட பிறகு மணல் குளிர்ச்சி அடைவதற்காக காத்திருந்துவிட்டு பிறகு அவர்கள் பயணத்தைத் தொடர்ந்தார்கள். ஆனால் பாலைவன வழிகாட்டிஅதிக உணவை உட்கொண்டதால் தூங்கி வழிந்தான். எருதுகளால் தாங்களாகவே நட்சத்திரங்களைக் கணித்து திசைகளை அறிய முடியாதே. எனவே அவை பெரும் வட்டப் பாதைகளில் நடந்து நடந்து இறுதியில் ஒருவழியாகக் கிளம்பிய இடத்துக்கே வந்து சேர்ந்தன!
அதற்குள் காலை ஆகிவிட்டிருந்தது. முன்தினம் எங்கிருந்து பயணத்தைத் துவக்கினார்களோ அதே இடத்துக்கு தாங்கள் வந்து சேர்ந்ததை பயணிகள் அறிந்தனர். தங்கள் நிலையை எண்ணி அழத் தொடங்கினர். அவர்களிடம் இருந்த தண்ணீர் இருப்பு காலியாகி விட்டிருந்தது. தாகத்தினால் இறந்து விடுவோமோ என்று அவர்கள் பயந்தனர்.
அப்போது அந்த வணிகன் இப்படி சிந்தித்தான். ‘இப்போது இந்த விபரீதமான சூழலுக்கு நடுவே என் தைரியத்தை இழந்து விட்டால் என் தலைமைக்கு அர்த்தமே கிடையாது. அழுதுகொண்டும் துரதிருஷ்டத்தை நினைத்து வருந்தி கொண்டும் இருந்தபடி நான் எதையும் செய்யாமல் இருந்து விட்டால், கொண்டுவந்துள்ள அத்தனை பொருள்களும் எருதுகளும் ஏன் நான் உட்பட என்னோடு வந்திருக்கும் அனைவரின் உயிர்களும் கூட சென்று விடும். நான் உற்சாகத்துடன் இந்த நிலைமையை எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டும்'.
அனைவரையும் காப்பாற்றக்கூடிய ஒரு திட்டத்தைத் தீட்ட அவன் முயற்சி செய்யத் தொடங்கினான்.
