Tenali Ramans Mask
King Krishnadev Raya enjoyed Tenali Raman's company and whenever Raman made him happy with his wit and prudence he showered him with rewards of many kinds. This made the chief priest envious, and he wanted to tarnish Raman’s reputation in front of the king.
One day, the chief priest went crying to the king and made false accusations against Raman. He also told the king that Raman had been slandering the king’s name. The king had much reverence for the royal priest and soft corner also owing to his age. Hence without any further contemplation, the king immediately called Raman to his court. Before Raman could speak, the king yelled, “Never show me your face again, or I will behead you.” “But, your majesty, what did I….” “Enough! I do not want to listen to anything you have to say. You have to follow my orders,” the king roared.
Even though Raman tried to explain, the king was too enraged to listen. So, Raman left the court in sorrow. After a few days, the king came to know from his courtiers that Raman was innocent, and the chief priest had misrepresented him. The king realized his mistake and scolded the chief priest. He then ordered the guards to fetch Raman. To his surprise, Raman stepped in with his face covered with a pot.
The king asked him, “Why are you covering your face with a pot, Rama?”
Tenali Raman replied, “Your majesty, as a citizen of Vijaynagar, it is my duty to follow your orders, but I couldn’t stay away from my royal duties. That is why, I took the help of this pot to hide my face from you, and at the same time, fulfill my royal duties.”
The king burst out laughing and asked Raman to remove the pot. He then embraced him and apologized for his hasty decision. Tenali Raman uses a clever way to teach the king not to be hasty in making decisions without knowing the facts.
தெனாலி ராமனின் முகமூடி
தெனாலி ராமனுடன் சகவாசம் வைத்து கொள்வதை மன்னர் கிருஷ்ணதேவ ராயர் மிகவும் ரசித்தார். தனது புத்திசாலித்தனத்தாலும் விவேகத்தாலும் மன்னரை ராமன் மகிழ்வித்தபோதெல்லாம் அவருக்கு பலவிதமான வெகுமதிகளை வாரி வழங்கினர். இது ராஜகுருவுக்கு பொறாமை உண்டாக்கியது. எப்படியாவது அரசர் முன்னிலையில் ராமனின் புகழுக்கு இழுக்கு தேடி தர ராஜகுரு கங்கணம் கட்டினார்.
ஒரு நாள் அரசனிடம் அழுது கொண்டே சென்று தெனாலி ராமன் மீது பொய் புகார் அளித்தார். மேலும் ராமன் அரசனின் பெயருக்கு களங்கம் விளைவிப்பதாக அரசரிடம் கூறினார். ராஜகுரு மீது மன்னர், அவரது வயோதிகம் காரணமாகத் தனிப்பட்ட இரக்கமும், மிகுந்த மரியாதையும் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஆதலால் மேற்கொண்டு யோசிக்காமல் உடனடியாக தலைமை குருவின் வார்த்தைகளை நம்பி, ராமனை தனது அரசவைக்கு அழைத்தார்.
ராமன் பேசுவதற்கு முன், இனிமேல் உன் முகத்தை எனக்கு ஒருபோதும் காட்டாதே, இல்லையேல் உன் தலையை துண்டித்துவிடுவேன் என்று அரசன் கத்தினார். ஆனால், நான் என்ன செய்தேன் மாட்சிமையே... "போதும்! நீ சொல்வதை நான் கேட்க விரும்பவில்லை. என் கட்டளையை நீ பின்பற்ற வேண்டும்” என்று அரசன் கர்ஜித்தார்.
மேற்கொண்டு ராமன் விளக்க முற்பட்டாலும், அரசர் அதற்கு காது கொடுக்க முடியாத அளவுக்கு ஆத்திரமடைந்தார். அதனால், ராமன் துக்கத்துடன் அரசவையை விட்டு வெளியேறினார்.
நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு, ராமன் குற்றமற்றவர் என்பதை அரசர் தனது இதர அரசவையினரிடமிருந்து அறிந்து கொண்டார். மேலும் ராஜகுரு ராமனை பற்றி தவறாக சித்தரித்தார் என்பதையும் அறிந்து கொண்டார். அரசர் தனது தவறை உணர்ந்து ராஜகுருவைத் கடிந்து கொண்டார். பின்னர் ராமனை அழைத்து வரும்படி காவலர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட்டார். ஆச்சரியப்படும்படியாக, ராமன் பானையால் முகத்தை மூடிக்கொண்டு உள்ளே நுழைந்தார்.
ஏன் ராமா, உன் முகத்தை பானையால் மூடிக்கொள்கிறாய் என்று மன்னர் கேட்டார். அதற்கு தெனாலிராமன், தங்கள் கட்டளைகளை பின்பற்றுவது என்பது விஜயநகரக் குடிமகனாகிய எனது கடமையாகும். ஆனாலும் அரச கடமைகளில் இருந்து என்னால் விலகி இருக்க முடியவில்லை. அதனால்தான், இந்தப் பானையின் துணை கொண்டு என் முகத்தை தங்களிடமிருந்து மறைத்தேன். அதே நேரத்தில் என் அரச கடமைகளையும் நிறைவேற்றினேன் என்று பதிலளித்தார் ராமன். மன்னர் வெடித்துச் சிரித்துவிட்டு, பானையை அகற்றுமாறு ராமனிடம் கேட்டார். பின்னர் அவரைக் கட்டித் தழுவி தனது அவசர முடிவுக்கு மன்னிப்புக் கேட்டார். உண்மை நிலவரம் அறியாமல் அவசர குடுக்கையாக முடிவெடுக்கக் கூடாது என்ற பாடத்தை மன்னருக்குப் புத்திசாலித்தனமாகப் புகட்டினார் ராமன். - கட்டுரையாளர்: ஆங்கிலத் துறை முன்னாள் உதவிப் பேராசிரியர்.
